Big Dog vs Little Mini

So I've got a somewhat big dog and a brand new mini JCW. What are you guys using to protect the back area? Mini sells a back boot cover. Anybody try this? Is there a better aftermarket one that will stay in place?

Thanks!

I have a clubman and bought the Mini checkered boot protector. It's nice quality and my 100lb dog has plenty of room but the sides are held up with 6 suction cups that stick on the windows and won't stay stuck. I also didn't like that my briefcases are beating around on my dog. So I just sent it back to the dealer in hopes of getting credit toward something else.

I bought a hammock-style rear seat cover from PetSmart for $69 and the dog loves it. I got my rear hatch back and everyone's happy.

Yea, but the clubman has more room in the back than the coupe. The other issue is she has a hard time getting in through the door. I have to slide the passanger seat all the way forward, which is a pain every time we get in and out. So with the seats down and using the rear hatch, I think it would be easier for both of us. Not to mention the rear seats are useless anyway...

Just take the seats out . I'm contemplating in doing that to my R53 until we get a kid.

I put my seats down and cover them with a sedan seat cover a friend gave me. It's just a standard plastic and suede(?) cover for the rear bench of a sedan. It covers the folded backseat and bootarea perfectly and keeps fur off of the back of the seats and the boot carpet. It doesn't cover the sides though, so may have to give the interior of the car a wipe down if your dog is a drooler.

I just have the back seats folded down, and tucked a blanket around everything so it covers up everything. It works well enough that I don't feel the need to go buy any purpose-made seat covers for a dog.

We have the Clubman so the 4-legged critters do not stick their noses under the rear hatch as it opens upwards and jump out to get Mr. Squirrel or whatever else has attracted their interest. The doors of the Clubman are perfect for pet ingress/egress which includes a 110 pound German Shepherd Dog and his buddy the 7 lb Papillon. We just throw a thin workout mat in the back to help them relax.

But, Petsmart has plenty of choices

The back boot cover works well, but it's rubberized with little ***** and not real comfortable. So does a thick stadium type blanket work, folded to fit. I ended up going to Big Lots and got a huge pet pillow for about 17 bux that extends from side to side and back the the parcel shelf. it has a corduroy cover that can be taken off and washed if necessary. I use it constantly and it gives my dog a comfy place to sit or snooze.

Pretty pointless without pics of said dog and said clubman.

We have a bouvier who is very clean but she still hasn't ridden in my Countryman. The Jack Russell and Wire Fox? I am nervous about them.

Chili4, good to have you responding to the post. The dog in question is named Chili ;-)

(the car doesn't have a name yet)

I second just pulling out the seats - they're useless anyway.

I pulled the seats out of my mini and put in a spare donut tire (I dumped the run flats), then covered up the exposed metal with a packing blanket (thick enough to also dampen some of the noise).

Tons more storage space in the back, rear seats are sitting in storage, and I had space for a spare!

check with REI. I got a nice tan cover for my border collie about 6 months ago and I think it was about 50.00. No stupid dog paws just tan. It has a coating on the underside. A little large, maybe three inches on each side but I tucked it in. I don't recall the brand.

I ordered a roll of the adhesive floor mats (like the dealers use). One on the back of each seat lasts quite a while. Then when I wash, detail the MINI, I can just peel it off. I have 6 dogs from Aussies to Yorkies so I am all about eliminating dog hair!

Update: my hammock-style rear seat cover (Martha Stewart brand from PetSmart) is working great. Regis is a 100lb Bernese Mountain Dog and he goes to the office with me every day. He hops right in and gets real comfortable. When he sheds too much hair I just take it out and lay it flat on the floor and run the vacuumed cleaner over it.

The attachments is real easy. You just loop 4 straps cover the 4-headrests. I can go from dog hammock to Grandkids hauler in 30-seconds.

I like it much better than that rear boot liner from Mini.

Do you all who travel with your canine companions take any measures to restrain them in the car? Especially those with huge dogs? I have two mini schnauzers that fit comfortably in the hatch area with the back seats up. I pad it with blankets and towels and they hop right in. When they're in there, I know that if I was to come to a sudden, abrupt stop, I wouldn't have a dog smash into my head or the dashboard/windshield. I would imagine that 100+ pound pooches could make for rather dangerous fluffy projectiles in the event of an accident.

I should but I don't, each dog finds their seat behind my wife and I and they usually lay down on longer trips. The first few miles the lab(65lb) rests her head on the middle of the back seat and looks at cars to the rear and our Am Staff mix (42lb) just sits in her seat and looks out the window. After 3-5 miles they both lay down until we get to "grandma's" house.
