Auto Insurance Question....

Okay, so me and my wifes policy is up with Progressive in about two weeks so we are shopping around for another.

Right now we currently pay 1875/six months for Progressive (that's how much our renewal price is on June 15th) but I have been shopping around and found that Geico is considerably cheaper (Apples to Apples comparison). A six month payout to Geico is 700 dollars! Why are they so much cheaper than everyone else? Anyone have experience with them?

Also another question, my wife is the primary holder for the Progressive account, we decided to see how much it would be for me to sign up as the primary and her the secondary as new customers with Progressive and it ended up being about 800 dollars cheaper than our current plan.. Now my question, is it possible for me to sign up for Progressive with me as a primary and her the secondary even though we already have insurance with them, or is that a no-no?

Any help is appreciated guys. Thanks!

I have had GEICO for several years now and am satisfied. Just went through an accident situation, and I thought they were good. Companies can and will vary quite a bit in their pricing. Has to do with how they do their underwriting. Just shop around and pick the best quote for the same coverage. If you are saving that much with GEICO, I wouldn't hesitate to sign up with them. If you just want to switch how your progressive policy is setup, give them a call and see if they will do it and save you some $.

If you are of AARP age, I highly recommend The Hartford, I would seriously think about signing up just to get the insurance (Hubby makes us eligible, me not 'til next year)!! Full Coverage on my '08 MINI Cooper and my Husband's '10 Kia Soul Shadow Dragon SE#3 and we're paying just over $1000/yr.!! Includes discount for also having our Home Owner's Policy with them too. Oh, that also includes me having one Ummmm (ticket) since owning Molly...it really is HER fault!!

You should be able to call them and ask them, under your existing policy, to switch "the primary driver designation" and then ask them what the newly configured premium will be. They should be able to do that within a matter of minutes ...if they won't then go with Geico...or Esurance - they have always been great with me.

Kudos to you for asking about a company before jumping on a low rate. Too many people treat auto insurance shopping the same as they would shopping for a coke.

Unlike Coca~Cola, not all insurance policies and service are the same.

While Geico is never going to win awards for their claims service, they sure aren't the worst out there either. They're in the middle of the pack somewhere.

If price is the highest priority for you, get the Geico coverage.

BTW... I've been an auto claims adjuster with State Farm for 6 years so I've had a on of experience dealing with Geico claims. We make fun of them sometimes but overall... not terrible.

Why? I don't see any problem with asking this question here.. At a automobile forum.. It's not like their are a ton of car insurance forums or reliable places to ask about this kind of thing.

And thanks for the answer guys. I called once today and changed up our plan to get the rate lower (it was 2200/six months!). All the places I've called (Allstate, 21st or Geico) are around what our current plan is now, which is why Geico threw a red flag when they were so low.

You can't compare rates with other people without knowing everything that goes into their rate and yours. Things like territory codes, age, gender, credit history, accident history, violation history, who else lives in their home, those people's driving records and other info, how many cars they have insured, other lines of insurance, etc, etc, etc.

6 years on this board and 6 years of reading people trying to compare insurance rates. Does. Not. Work.

If you're happy with your insurance company, why not tell everyone which company it is ? People are quick to drop names when they're not happy. Would be good to hear the name of a company doing well by you.... even if is one of my employer's competitors.

Capt_bj, I just had a total loss with GEICO in April (full liability accepted by the other party) and just this week received my renewal notice/bill.

Amica tends to be very highly ranked for customer satisfaction. I have my homeowner's insurance with them, but they are nowhere near competitive with auto rates (for me, in my region). If they were, I would use Amica in a heartbeat.

I'm sure he meant at-fault claim.

There's not a State in the country that would allow insurers to cancel policyholders for a claim in which they were not at fault. Wouldn't make sense from an actuarial perspective either.

I'll give a nod towards State Farm - $525/6 months for coll/comp... Not to mention I'm 22, and have an accident and a speeding ticket under my belt. Dealing with State Farm has always been top-notch.

I'm going to stray off topic here for a bit but... this guy. This guy right here (CP&PW&JB) knows what he's talking about. He's probably one of the first people I spoke with in this forum about car insurance (and everything else) and he always gave me sound advice. I'd follow this guy off a cliff for insurance tips

That's all.

Progressive and Geico are not the best choice. Progressive cheaps out on repairs and Geico wont defend you in an accident even if the police report states it was the other persons fault. I've been with Travelers for 4 years now, previously SafeCo, and pay only about $800 a year with above state coverage. NH does not require insurence so I opted for a higher coverages.

Insurance

I went with nationwide insurance for my Clubman S.
Also you might want to check, my insurance was lowered because they consider the Clubman as a station wagon, make sure your getting this rating also.
It will lower the rates some.

Glad to see an insurance person on the board. Just purchased my MCS last weekend, so I'm new to this board. I work in the business as well. Been in the business 15 years, all in claims. I've been an adjuster (including appraising), SIU, a claims manager and am now a claim consultant. I always try to give an honest perspective when people ask about insurance, but there's such a general mistrust of insurance companies that it makes for a tough road sometimes.

And I totally agree with everything you said. Comparing rates among other people just doesn't work.

Police reports only serve to assist in liability investigations. There are times when other evidence overrides the police officers report.

While most officers are good at their jobs, not all are. I once called an officer about his report and the clown seriously told me my State Farm insured driver must have had a red light because he was on the smaller of the two streets. What ?!

Welcome to the board ! Glad to have others here to assist with insurance questions. I've fielded many over the years.

That's quite a resume you have !

Hmm.. Interesting, I'm going to call Geico and ask for a over-the-phone quote before I make any decisions on them.

I called Progressive twice over the weekend and once I was on the phone for about an hour and a half figuring out why the quoted price online was different then I was paying and we got it all figured out and the quote is still lower than what I'm paying (by about 200 bucks for a 6 month plan) so we might just bite the bullet and stay with Progressive.

I'm checking AAA now too just to see how much their insurance is and see if it's any cheaper.

Thanks guys for all the help! If anyone else has any recommendations or comments, feel free to post them!

I'd like to hear how your AAA experience goes!! Unfortunatley, besides the *clearing throat* ticket, we've also had a Home Owner's Claim, Auto Insurance only went up $11/mo., Home Owners's no effect.

I'll give another nod to State Farm, in the past two years I've had to file two accident claims (deer strike and rear ended) and for two windshields (lots of gravel trucks where I drive). I've always had awesome service whether dealing with a claim rep or my local agent for picking the coverage I need.
