Ill chime in with doing the same all around. Not to hijack...but for those of you who have tint...got any tips for keeping the tint scratch free? Really want to tint my car, but the tint on my Accord developed fine hairline scratches all over it (assuming from being scratched by rolling up and down?) Is there a certain type of tint or other tip to stop that?

Getting a decent brand. Keep it clean and don't touch it. I use a mixture of water and rubbing alcohol to keep min clean and have not had any problems other then scratching it rubbing a box against the back widow.

THANKS!

Not sure about other brands but I had Llumar Tints put on and they have a lifetime warranty. Mine started pealing up in one corner of my driver side window because of some snow that got in and melted. They replaced it free of charge, which is alway good.

Haven't had any problems with scratches on mine. Be sure and use a window cleaner that doesn't have ammonia in it. I vary between Clarity (Prima) and Invisible Glass (Stoners) and they both work great.

I've been contemplating how I should get the front windows tinted. I may end up going with 35% on the back and 50% on the front. I really don't want to get a ticket but at the same time I really don't want to not have any tint on the windows.

I'm am going 20% all around and 50% on my windshield. The sun is a killer in the summer here in PHX. I would go darker all around, but going much darker it's hard to see at night in reverse.

I feel that 35% all around looks awesome. Thats what I'm planning to do when i get mine. My question is what is the difference between ceramic and other tints?

you have dyed, metal, carbon, and ceramic tint (cheapest to most expensive). the performance of the tint (solar energy rejection, glare reduction, etc.) increases as the cost increases. what this means is that you can get the same results using a lighter ceramic tint as you would if you used a darker metal tint.

also, they say there are issues with signal interference with metal tints, but i had a metal tint on my previous car and had no issues.

Tell me about the ceramic and why it looks better. I know it does a better job of keeping the heat in the car down but I didn't know it looked differently. Does anyone know what, is any, tint comes on the car from the factory? Because to be legal you have to add that to whatever you put on. So, if a car came with 15% and you put 35% on, you would be at 50% and be illegal in a 35% state.

Well the MINI has no tinting other then the strip on the windshield.

As far as ceramic goes it has a nice reflective look to it. So, even if you don't go that dark it makes it a little harder to see in it for those that might want to ****** something from your MINI. Plus depending on where you go most places will lifetime warranty it because it is pretty expensive tint.

A couple of corrections. No car comes stock with 15% (remember the tint percentage number isn't the darkness factor but the light transmission factor, so 15% would mean 85% of the light is blocked ). The number that's generally talked about is 80% for factory in-the-glass tint. A stock Mini certainly has some factory tint, just open the window partially and compare the open portion with the glass portion.

Secondly, tint over tint is multiplicative, not additive. So, 35% tint over 80% factory glass gets you 28% light transmission. (.35 x .80).

Thanks for the clarification. I had it backwards (as usual - LOL) So, nopw that I'm completely confused, CA is 35% front windows. How much can I tell the tint guy to go ans still be legal?

Interesting. I'm getting conflicting information on CA tint laws from Google. A website that provides quotes on tinting says that you can put 70% (transmission, 30% dark) tint on the side windows but does not mention the windshield other than to say the top banner is OK.

However, the CHP website says:
Can I put after-market tinting on the windows of my vehicle?
The main requirements for legal window tinting in California are:

1. The windshield and front driver's side and passenger's side windows cannot receive any aftermarket tinting.
2. If the rear window of a vehicle is tinted, the vehicle must have outside rearview mirrors on both sides.

The law prohibits any person from driving any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows, with certain limited exceptions.

However, legislation signed into law effective January 1, 1999, exempts from the above prohibition specified clear, colorless, and transparent material that is installed, affixed, or applied to the front driver and passenger side windows for the specific purpose of reducing ultraviolet rays. If, as, or when this material becomes torn, bubbled or otherwise worn, it must be removed or replaced.
I don't know how up to date that page is, but it says only 100% (transmission, 0% dark) tint may be used on the front drivers and passenger windows--and no tint at all on the windshield!

If that is true, then tinting the front half of the car at all gives the cops an excuse to pull you over any time they feel like it. Most won't bother, but there would be some risk.

I have like 35 in the front and 10 in the back or somethin... don't go too dark because then night driving sucks... oh and because of the way our windows have those little dots everywhere around the windows at the back, make sure your tint person takes extra care there... mine needs to get touched up.

Photos Needed!

After writing to help to ask how to start a thread about tinting the windows, I happened on this one in a google search (why it didn't show up here when I searched the site is a mystery).
I am considering it but would love to see photos of the cars who have tinted, reviews of the tints used (do it yourself and professional) and any and all suggestions.
So if you have subscribed and reading this and have tinted your Mini windows, post a photo please and thank you.

20% all around, done here in Cincinnati, Jay's Window Tinting & Vinyl Graphics. Highly recommend them, they also did my wife’s escape.
