Cold air intake?
MINIs already have a factory cold air intake. K&N makes a drop in replacement filter for the stock MINI air box.

A foam high flow filter is also a great option.

Most aftermarket cold air intakes, are not true cold air intakes, don't improve performance and only make the intake noisier.

You can look at the new NM CAI for the 2011 N18 motor here:

I have their CAI for the N14 on my R55S and I think it's great!
Good Luck

Nothing that is offered is a true CAI. If it was it would run out of the engine bay. Nothing does that is on the market right now. Also it really does not matter if it is because it is going to heat up when compressed by the turbo.
Actually Mr. Porthos, I believe you are mistaken. Several companies offer true CAI's as in open to or fed by outside air. DOS, DDM, M7, and several others offer true CAI's. But that issue is really beside the point. The principal issue is air flow.
The use of the term CAI as in "Cold Air Intake" is actually a bit inaccurate. Most products that are available are really OAI's or "Open Air Intake". Open air is where the intake filter element is open to the air as opposed to closed up in a box. Both CAI's and OAI's are generally superior to the stock "snorkel box" system. The issue is not so much the air temperature as the inherent resistance to flow or draw in the stock "snorkel box" system. "Opening" the filter element greatly increases the flow rate of the system allowing the intake to work more efficiently. You will see a small improvement in performance with the change to either a CAI or an OAI.
If you are able to remove all the other restrictions in the intake system, like the muffler and the noise maker, you can achieve a nice overall improvement.
BTW, the temperature of the air under the hood gets pretty close to ambient once the car is moving. You can further improve good air flow and temperature by opening the hood scoop.
