thinking about joining the mini family
thinking about joining the mini family
Hi all!
I wanted to ask a few questions and I'm hoping someone will help. I have an 06 passat (near 60k miles) and I've had nothing but trouble (piece on turbo cracking, steering column lock went out, wheeling bearing problems galore!!,etc). I will be moving out in the near future and need a reliable car but I love minis! I was wondering what year was the best. Is this a nice reliable car because I am sick and tired of stuff breaking down on my car!!! There is something new every other month. I know every car has their issues so what can I expect with a mini. Also what year did mini make the electric blue color?? It's what I'm after if I get a mini. Help please!!

Welcome to NAM, Irish.
According to Consumer Reports, the Gen2 ('07 to '10; -the last year covered in the April 2011 issue of CR) Mini Coopers (non-S) are more reliable than the Passats, with the exception of the '09 Passat, which is above average in reliability for some reason. The '05 through '09 Mini Cooper S's show worse than average reliability, but the '10 MCS was still above average in reliability.
Although reliability data are based on large samples, you can reduce your risks significantly by being very careful about the history and condition of any used car you consider buying. In terms of history, a Carfax report is just a starting point; a complete history of services and repairs is much better. In terms of condition, a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) by a MINI dealer or independent shop that knows MINIs is advised. Buying a CPO MINI from a dealer should reduce your risk as well.
Some MINI owners here have apparently had very few problems with even high mileage MINIs, while others have apparently been through the same bad experiences you've had with your Passat; just one damn thing after another. Choose carefully.
For some here, driving fun trumps reliability, and the MINI is a hoot to drive.
Hope you get a good one.

I came from a B5.5 Audi 1.8T. A Mini is to the B5 platform as a Camry is to a Mini. Make sense?
For the record, I spent $4k in maintenance (install myself, so this is parts a lone) in the past 24mo of owning the b5. This is completely aside from the performance upgrades I had.

I have been reading this site for 4 years. You will be better served to get a non-S mini. 80k miles and no troubles for me.
The Passat we had (V6, 2000) was nothing but the most troublesome car I could ever have imagined. It was worse than and MG. Worse than a FIAT.
Had my wife not been friends with a VW mechanic that thing would be in the back yard right now. Instead, it was traded in and I might add at half price.
POS x 100000000000000
I wish VW/Audi would just go out of business. The world does not need such POSs.
