any DIYer's have an EZ CAR LIFT?
I just picked up one of these. I should have ordered it years ago!
I've already used it 3-4 times and am happy with it.
Yes it's expensive as far as home lifts go, but it provides excellent access to the parts of the car you actually work on - the bottom!
I didn't get a scissor lift for this reason. it would make doing exhaust or subframe work impossible.
The lift just barely fits under my car in the front - I roll up on a couple of pieces of 2x10 to ensure smooth operation. The lift capacity is lower when fully lowered due to the physics of things.
I was able to remove the subframe of a 2002-2006 MINI Cooper using this lift, by removing the front cross bar of the lift after the vehicle was raised.
If you are worried about single point of failure, throw a jack stand or large block of wood under the lift or under a tire. That's what I do. Just remember to take it back out when lowering, to avoid damaging the lift.
I use a Bosch 1030VSR 7.5 amp, 2100rpm drill with this lift. It worked fine with a 6 amp drill as well, but i wouldn't use anything with less power. Slower RPM drills work great but you'll wait longer for the lift to go up or down. Once you've cleared the first 6 inches, the drill is almost free spinning. You only really need the amps for the first 6 inches.
The one con is moving the thing around. It basically takes up a 5ft x 5ft square on your garage floor. You have to either drive over the lift or have some room next to your car to be able to slide it out from under the car.
It would be great if there were casters on one side to make it easier to move the lift around vertically.
In my book the EZ Car Lift is a winner.
