MINI Special Editions

In the few short months I've been involved in either shopping for or owning a MINI, there's been at least two special editions that have come out: the Laurel package and the WC50. Is it just timing on my part or does MINI frequently come out with limited edition packages?

Some are marketing hype some are really special editions
The Laurel, Camden, Mayfair, Parklane, Checkmate fall into that catagory, I mean they do pay homeage to original Mini editions, but noting that sets them apart and they come out randomly. Then there was the MC40 pays homeage to it Rally wins anniversary, which could have been relavant if it had the JCW Kit and introduced the JCW Version 2.0 Kit including 380mm injectors and cold air intake. But MINI chose to make it just an MCS. There was the Canadian spec "Competition" model which had the full factory JCW kit including brakes and struts I think, not sure. The "Competition" was made for Canada cause they did not get the GP. The GP, was built pretty much at the end of the R53 production run, a marketing trend that BMW always does ie: M3 Sport Evolution, M3 LTW-GT2, M3 CSL. Also mid production make-overs tend to bring out special editions. The GP most consider a real speacial edition due to parts "not available" to other non GP owners and factory go fast parts not available on other R53s. IMO GP could have used an additional 15-20hp, oh and the euro spec Recaros. The WC50 I am a bit on the fence still, I am bummed it does not have JCW suspension or factory go fast parts not available to other R56 owners to set it apart. But MINI like BMW will tend to save it real special editions until the end of the models production cycle (around 7 years)
