Deal crumbling away
Deal crumbling away
Thought I was buying my car, now the dealer says because it is an out of state purchase it may be another week before I can take possesion of it. They should have never offered it to me in the first place. Screwed by a stealership once again. They got my hopes up and then ripped the rug out from under me.
You didn't actually look at the car or did you have to order it? I'm totally confused by this as well. You live in Hawaii according to your profile so I would assume that if it wasn't on the lot it was going to take a while.
Sorry, Having a bad day. Drove the car, was told it was available for sale. They needed a day to get it cleaned up and serviced and it would be ready. Next day came and they said the night crew couldn't get to it. It will be ready now for pick up on thursday(today) Called the dealer and they said it was ready except that they can't sell it because it is from out of state and they don't have the title for it yet. They're now saying it might take up to a month to get it. Don't know if I want to wait for this one or look for another one. I'm not a patient person.
Last week I decided to buy but I wanted a specific car. The dealer searched the data banks and found one that fit the bill in MO. I waited a week for delivery and it just came in this morning. They needed to put it through a process where they check the car's electronics, etc. so I'll be picking it up tomorrow. You are in Hawaii - can't the dealer get the title FEDEXed?
Is there another dealer you can try?

Oh ok. Ya sounds like they should have had it even up for viewing. Its really not the dealerships falt(as far as the title), trust me I had that problem when I left Hawaii and tried to get the title for my MINI to have it registered in Florida. It is really the state and the banks fault that the dealership hasn't gotten the title. And I love MINI of Hawaii those guys are absolutely awesome. They treated me way better then I thought I should have gotten treat considering that I did not buy MINI from them. Patience is a virtue. If it looks good, drives good, and has no issues then you should be good.
Well, I finally got it but all isn't said and done. They said they put it through a full detail and I proved to them that they only washed it. There were other things that nearly sent us walking. Our saleslady was very nice but could never give me a straight answer on any question I asked. The finance lady was very nice and very well informed. It was just a very frustrating ordeal that you would expect from a fly by night type dealer, not a Mini/BMW dealer.
The hangup on the title is simple, if the car came from another state and had a payoff the dealer has to pay the car off, the bank may wait a period of time for the check to clear before releasing the title, then the dealer has to get the car titled in Hawaii which means running it thru their DMW, which takes more time.......makes perfect sense.
So you can either wait for the title to come, or go ahead and start enjoying your new car and not worry about it, since it's not a legal sale till title transfers to you. That means that you can drive it, and if for some reason they can't deliver a clean title to you, the deals off and the car goes back to them and all of your money comes back to you. If they do get you a clean title, you just go on as always....pretty simple and easy.

+1 to title processing woes. It really bites when banks and other state DMVs drag their feet.
You should be on your way soon. Just keep telling yourself all the fun you will have driving the twisties in the mountains.

Ask them to let you take it on a dealer plate until the title comes then. That is common practice in dealerships who are used to the title delay.
Just sign the papers, and drive on their plate.

I deal with liens and titles where I work. Some states take up to two weeks to process filings. Others happen online almost immediately. Usually, if something is required right away, the dealer can just give you a copy of the documents they sent and proof that they sent them. They would serve as adequate temporary proof that the titles have been transferred.
I'm sure the dealer wants to close the deal as quickly as possible rather than drag their feet. Especially since it's nearing a month end and they likely have a business target they want to meet.

Because it's on the lot. Not a big deal. I bought a Subaru in Washington from a dealer who bought it in Oregon where it had been driven from Arizona. Then I drove it home to California. Was a PIA to get all the paperwork (WA DMV had to send a letter to CA DMV, etc.) Got a temporary tag in CA until they got the blessed paperwork and all was well.
If I was offered a detail job that was to be performed by the dealer I'd run away. Most dealers have no clue what a real detail is. They are likely to screw your car up in their so called detail.
Enjoy the new MINI.

I usually do run the other way but when the detail tech described to me in detail what they were going to do, it wasn't far off from what I was going to do. Figured a BMW dealership would have their act together. Besides, I saw the work they did on my MIL's Z4, and was impressed. It was in bad shape before they detailed it.
I saw your pictures in the other thread. Laser blue - my fav. I didn't see that there was a blue sticker on the bumper saying it had been "temp registered" in Hawaii. If it wasn't registered you could get a ticket.
Couldn't they have given you a loaner until they got the paperwork from the mainland? Doesn't seem like they should have let a car drive off that you could have gotten a ticket in.

It has temporary registration that is good for 30 days. If I get a ticket, they will have to pay for it. Shouldn't be a problem though. My HPD friend confirmed that the temp registration is sufficient. The salesperson was going to give me a loaner until they figured out that they could let me drive it. The blue sticker is a different temporary registration that they use mostly for military. It saves them from having to pay full price for registration in 2 states.

Yea they didn't inform me of anything until I had already fallen head over heals in live with my soon to me new car. I somehow don't think it is over with yet either. I'll sleep better once I have permanent Hawaii registration. Until then I'm concerned the deal may still go sour.
