Do black roofs overheat interior?

In warmer climates, does a black roof tend to cause the rather small interior to overheat?

(Just looking at my options before purchase.)

I wouldn't say overheat, but probably does get hotter than a white roofed mini.

It gets hot, but I wouldn't say too much hotter. My wife's Silver Celica is usually about as hot as my Jet Black MINI. Also, remember, MINIs have the automatic window feature. Holddown the unlock button on your fob as you are walking to the car a d the windows will automatically go down. Helps let all the hot air out before you get in.

I've had PW/PW and PW/B - couldn't tell a difference and we get extreme heat and extreme cold here in Nashville. Definitely not enough difference to affect your color choice so I say get the color(s) you want. Good luck and keep us posted.

We have one with a black roof and one with a white roof, and we live in sunny California. I've never noticed a difference between them.

I'd say it depends on the interior. If you did the George Foreman 4x Electric Grill mod, then the interior may get a bit warm regardless of roof color. but on the plus side, u got Cheeseburgers! Sincerely though, on hot days open the windows/roof on your way to the car, as previously suggested, and get the color you want most for your roof .

If you have a sun roof, you can push the unlock button on the key fob, hold it down a few seconds and the sunroof will open and the windows will roll down. It cools right down!

Also to consider is if you have a Sunroof it covers more of the roof area than the metal. The sunroof lets more heat through than the steel, regardless of color. I have a black roof and a sunroof with Huper Optik that rejects much of the heat. I debated the black roof vs silver or white for a long time. Now after 2 years I'm much happier with the black - no real heat issues and I got the color I wanted.

I wish I still had this news cast but it was before DVRs and ease of putting TV stuff on the interwebs but, while I was living in Northern Mississippi the news did a report on which is hotter white with black interior, white with light colored interior, black with light interior, and black with black interior. And if I am not mistaked the white with black interior was the hottest and the white with the light colored interior was the coolest. I think that the temp was less then 5F. But also the logic was that the black interior would absorb it and since the white reflects it would reflect into the car. But this was like 10 years ago and I don't remember what he exact outocme from it before I will see if google will help.

Are these dealer programming options? My '06 MCS does neither of these cool things.

But I did install the Ian Cull window circuit board if that makes any difference.

White roof top only aids in reflecting light than it does solar radiation as both are made of metal.

With regards to fying eggs.......well it might just be a tad qicker getting a hard yolk on the black......

Mythbusters tested this awhile back. Black car was about 10 F hotter than white. IIRC, this matched what someone on the forum tested with an infrared thermometer on a dealer parking lot.

There has been some talk in California about mandating the use if infrared reflective paint on car roofs to reduce gas consumption. A hotter car runs the A/C more. A/C consumes power from the engine...

Best thing you can do is to get the HuperOptik window film. It has something like a 58% heat rejection factor. That'll do more for your car than the white roof will.
