I did go with the XXL. It not only covers the head unit and GPS that I have, I also found out it covers climate control where the XL does not if you have it.
What'd you end up paying? Or is it a secret?

That seems higher than normal but my dealer did tell me MINI was raising the price during January.

I bought mine from MINI of Birmingham and yes they did have to put the key fob in the reader to process the deal. My approach, I talked to them about it in October then when I was within a thousand miles I called back and told them I had done all of my business with them and would rather buy from them but was going to call every MINI dealer in driving distance (3-4 in my case) and would go with the best price so give me your best. And I was happy with what I got. I also called near the end of the month and he said that price was just good till the end of the month. I always here that they will make better deals then to get their month end numbers up but don't know if that is true or just an urban legend since I have never worked in automotive sales. I don't remember the name of the guy, but it was the finance manager. He is the one that deals will all warranty sales there.

Ouch.

I'm used to Toyota land where a 6/100k manufacturer extended warranty is just $800.

After a test drive of the '11 the Mini definitely has me emotionally hook line and sinker. But horror stories about long term(well distance with a long commute) reliability worry me. But for $3-4k I wonder if I should just plan on driving it 50,000 miles then trading it in. With my commute that'd be a mere 2 years though.

i just got quoted at 3 different socal mini dealers:

1) first one didn't offer the XL extended motorer plan but offered 3rd party through fidelity...around $2500 for up to 7 yrs/100k but $100 deductible

2) second one offered $3115 for up to 6yr/100k, $3215 for up to 7yr/70k, and $3565 for up to 7yr/100k...no deductible if mini taken to the same dealer, but $50 deductible for other mini dealers...

3) third one offered $3040 for up to 6yr/100k and $3490 for up to 7yr/100k, $50 deductible for every visit, regardless of which dealer i go to

seems like the 2nd one is the best in terms of pricing... i've already purchased the extended maintenance warranty last year for $1600...

just wondering whether i can bargain with the second dealer for a bit less... i have to do it today or tomorrow as i only have about 100 miles left before i hit 50K miles

hope the info helps!

I had to use the extended warranty for the first time, the dealer didn't charge me the $50.

I very much need to buy the MINI Extended Motoror Protection. I've got 43K miles on my 08 Clubman S. I love the car and its been pretty reliable so far, but I am scared to death to keep this car after the original warranty runs out due to the ridiculous off-warranty repair costs I've heard about.

I picked up a brochure from my dealer, but after reviewing it, I noticed the following language on the back cover:

SPECIAL NOTE: Coverage under this program is limited to defects in material or workmanship only. Wear and tear is the responsibility of the vehicle owner. (emphasis mine)

This really concerns me as to what is actually covered under this plan. I understand "normal wear and tear" items usually mean things like tires, wiper blades, brake pads, but this is not what this provision seems to be saying.

For example, what if my piston rings go bad at 80K miles? Will MINI say that they just "wore out" and are therefore, not covered? How do you prove a "defect in materials or workmanship" versus "normal wear and tear"?

This is very different language than that used in the original warranty. I don't mind paying for the extra coverage, but I want to make sure I actually have "the coverage". Has anyone had any experience with this???

reliability

Unfortunately I think this all points to one thing - BMW's assessment of the reliability of the power train. If they thought the machine was reliable over 100k they would sell warranties for 150k or 200k miles. They do not which is a clear message to owners. And the message is that their power train is not likely to be reliable over 100k miles.
I think we all love our Mini's but how much are we willing to spend to keep them running?

Make you wonder?
Yeah previously they covered everything for me even wipers and brakes, not tires though.

I think you have the correct idea, but are stating in a slightly wrong way. There are very few, if any, extended warranties which cover more than 100k miles on any vehicle.

But your point is that BMW knows these cars are pretty unreliable and subject to expensive repairs, look at how many are having $500-$1,500 engine repairs with moderately low mileage (around 50,000) for the chain tensioner rattle, and related problems.

The fact that BMW charges $3,000-$4,000 for an extended warranty on the Mini speaks volumes about the projected repair costs and reliability.

As another poster noted above, the 6/100k extended warranty for our 2011 Toyota Highlander was $900. This is on a $38k truck, with pretty complex stuff like sat nav, 4WD transfer case, three zone climate control (which means two separate HVAC systems/condensors etc), smart key and all that jazz.

So BMW knows how expensive and unreliable these cars are, and they are charging accordingly, because they have performed a very comprehensive, detailed statistical analysis of predicted reliability, cost of repairs, etc and they know they need to charge at least $3,000-$4,000 to make money on the warranty.

Remember, the house always wins, extended warranties are a form of insurance/gamble.

This particular warranty runs concurrently with the factory warranty, so you are only really buying an additional 2 or 3 years of coverage and 50,000 miles....for $3,000-$4,000!!!!

This is very telling about what BMW knows about the predicted repair costs for these vehicles, and is very disappointing and unacceptable in this day and age.

I can't believe a car requires $3,000-$4,000 in repairs over a two year, 50,000 mile period in 2012.

No wonder Consumer Reports list the Mini as one of the worst used car purchases to avoid...

Guess I made a good choice to lease, not buy, because these cars are great fun but a terrible value.

An update to my previous post last December:

I decided against the extended protection agreement due to the restrictive language and the crazy cost. Wanting to stay in the MINI family, I tried to negotiate a trade of my 08 Clubman S on a new one. Same options = almost a $4,000 list price increase in 4 years (per the salesman: the result of MINI playing with the package options since 08). Given a mediocre trade offer on my near pristine 08 and a whopping 3% reduction off the list price of the new one. I finally gave up and bought a loaded 2012 Ford Focus Titanium. It ain't a MINI, but the more I drive it, the more I like it. Pretty danged nice for a 'Merkin' car.

I feel I gave it my best shot but it didn't make financial sense. I'm really disappointed that I couldn't stay with MINI. Loved the car.......Not so much MINI/BMW's corporate philosophy.

quoting from the fine print of the pdf file: "Special Note: Coverage under this program is limited to defects in material or workmanship only. Wear and tear is the responsibility of the vehicle owner." i think this severly limits the worth of this program scott

If prospective buyers read all these posts,I think the majority would end up buying something else.
I'm reading all this stuff after buying a new mini,my bad for not doing my homework.
My wife and I decided that her '10 Camaro SS was just not economical with todays fuel prices and wanted something that was more fuel efficent.I was thinking of a Prius or other Toyota because of their reliability, but my wife did not want a granny car.My car is an '05 Corolla XRS with 115000 miles. The only issues so far is the belt tensioner had to be replaced two times. She liked the Mini's and their sporty looks.I wanted her to be happy with her car.
I hope we dont have all these issues down the road.

I'm picking up my Mini this weekend, it's a Certified '09 MCS Manual with 21k miles on it. Got it for $20k and I briefly sat down with the finance guy before I left. They're offering the extended plans and I wanted to see what you guys think.

Mini Maintenance 6yr/100k -- $1895
Mini Wheel/Tire -- $1495

Since it's certified the extended warranty will only extend it by one year, so I'm not considering that one.

I've heard that these items are negotiable too, has anyone had success in talking these down?

It's had the water pump replaces under the recall, but nothing about the fuel pump or timing chain tensioner. I'm assuming these issues will come up, so I'm glad I have the factory warranty still.

Also they have the 3M shield for $599, thoughts on that?

Thanks all!

We had no success on a price reduction for the extended warranty, guess it depends on the dealer.
Passed on the tire protection.
All these things sure add up!!

Is the 3M Shield covering they put on?
