OK, I took a close look at the Mini brochure...on the second page, it says the plan provides protection "beginning at the expiration of the MINI Passenger Car Limited Warranty." So with the Mini plan, whenever you choose to buy it, you are extending coverage for 5, 6, or 7 years beyond the original 4 year/50k miles warranty. This is a good thing, because there is no overlap.

With the third party 4 yr/75k miles plan I just bought on the last day of the original warranty, I am getting coverage for 4 more years or 35k miles (since I have 40k on the odo now). But if I had bought the same 4 yr/75k plan on the first day I owned my car, the 4 years would already be up. Or if I had bought it 2 years ago, then 2 years would already be up, so I would only have 2 years remaining, etc.

Conclusion: With the Mini plan, you don't have to worry about overlap. With third party plans, you do. Doesn't mean that third party plans are inferior, you just have to choose your plan and time your purchase carefully.

I am still not 100% clear on this it says, 45 months since first service?
If someone wants to buy the Mini plan, they have to pull the trigger within with first 45 months/45k miles from the date the car was first placed in service as a new vehicle.

Cool thanks, think I got it now
Oh also got letter from dealer today inviting me to find out about their Extended Motorer Protection plan.

I'm going to check into this, I do not think it is 5, 6, or 7 years in addition to the new car warranty. Typically BMW uses this phrase for the CPO warranty, and it means that coverage begins upon expiration of your new car warranty, but the 5, 6, 7 years (and the 100,000 miles) start from when the car is new.

2007 & Newer only?

Hey guys--local dealer says this plan is only good for 2007 and newer models, even though some 2006's fall into the time frame.

Can anyone else confirm? Thanks.

It extends the factory warrenty.

The MINI Extended Motor protection plan just extends the factory bumper to bumper warrenty to what you want to pay. When your factory warrenty is up it will let it continue to 5,6 or 7 years. The 7 year extension has two levels. one ends at 70,000 miles and the other ends at 100,000 miles. The five or six year plans ends at 100,000 miles.
The XL which is about $3,000 up depending on which plan you choose covers everything except the Radio,CD player/changer, entertainment system, navigation system and any components of those systems. There is a XXL warrenty that adds those items for $3,300 up.
All pans are $50.00 deductable which means you still pay the first $50.00 for each visit.
A brochure is available from your Mini dealer. That is where this information came from. The pricing was from my Mini dealer.

OK, it's making sense now:
5/100k is designed for someone averaging 20k per year. This driver's original 4/50k factory warranty will expire at 50k, about 2.5 years from new. So the 5/100k gives him/her another 2.5 years or 50k.
6/100k is designed for someone averaging just under 17k per year. This driver's original 4/50k factory warranty will expire at 50k, just short of 3 years from new. So the 6/100k gives him/her another 3 years/50k.
7/70k is designed for someone averaging 10k per year. This driver's original 4/50k factory warranty will expire at the end of year 4, when the car reaches 40k. So the 7/70k gives him/her another 3 years/30k.
7/100k is designed for someone averaging just over 14k per year. This driver's original 4/50k factory warranty will expire at 50k, about 3.5 years from new. So the 7/100k gives him/her another 3.5 years/50k.

The third party extended warranty I recently bought gives me another 4 years/35k for $2200 with zero deductible, so I got a relative bargain I have an 05 MCS.

Guys this is great info. We were orginally quoted $1,400 for our 2009 Clubman. Looks like reality is we will pay more when going to our dealer. The other option is an aftermarket place called Paragon. They offer $2,100 for 7/100K.
I won't spend any money until after I do some more reasearch, but as hohod as specified... it looks like the 3rd party might be the way to go if you read the fine print. I'll keep you posted throughout the week.

I am a bit scared of 3rd party, with the economy and stories of insurance companies shutting business and leaving folks out in the cold.

Has anyone had a good experience with aftermarket extended warranties? They seem like a good deal, my quote was 4 years, 100,000 miles, bumper to bumper, for $2,173. However, as I did some research, it seems like there are just horror stories of people trying to get claims paid from these companies. I know that people tend to complain when stuff goes bad, so has anyone had a good experience?

They are hit or miss, there are some good ones but usually it will be a headache. a) who knows if the company will still be in business, b) your dealer needs to get authorization before they can touch your car EVERY TIME, c) they will usually try to find some fine print that says your defect is not covered.

I know it's an old thread, but has anyone ever had success in getting the "MINI USA Extended Motorer Protection"? I just bought an '08 MC and warranty is expiring in a year and half, want to keep the bumper to bumper instead of going 3rd party.

thanks

Actually, I am going to revive this again. My dealer says that they do not honr this warranty. I found this strange since it is a BMW/ MINI warranty and they sell both. Was told they don't honor the BMW one either.

Are they allowed to do this? I am calling MINI USA about it but figured I would ask.

Sounds like they don't like doing warranty work and getting paid at a lower amount (faster book time) and would rather do customer work and get paid by the people. I don't like this at all.

You really have to let us know what Mini USA say's about this. (Please )

I was told that my car would be covered no matter where I was if I purchased the 7-year 100,000 mile bumper to bumper warrenty that takes over when your 4-year warrenty ends.I was told everything except the Clutch is covered. The radio/cd player requires a different warrenty but it is available.

I'm talking about the extended vehical warrenty and not the maintenance warrenty here.

I sure don't want to buy a warrenty that is not going to work at every Mini Dealership. Not for the $3,300 BMW/MINI charges for it.

I doubt any official MINI dealer could refuse to honor the MINI extended warranty and keep their dealer status. If they tried it might take you calling MINI USA but I am sure you would win out fast. Talking to my service manager, they said it wasn't necessary that they haven't had that many issues where financially it was worth spending the $3500+ for it. But what yetti96 said about them making more money off of customer work makes sense that they would discourage it in the service department even though the sales department pushes it.

I had originally decided against this but after asking this on the last WRR, I think I may go ahead and purchase it. I have 4k miles to decide!

So I called and spoke to a rep. She said they can choose to not sell the protection plan but they cannot refuse to honor it. If they do, and it's proven, they would risk losing the dealership status.

So I filed a complaint as the dealership would not even give pricing.

So e next day i get a call and that they are concerned about the complaint I filed. Told me i mis- understood Nd they have offered the plan since MINI offered it. I told them I still had and email that stated they will not sell it and that they do not honor the warranty it at the dealership. Sent it over and now they are doing everything they can to give me a deal.

Set a precedent and get a group buy together

You get them to give you one good deal holding that email over there heads!! Hey, if they will give you a really good deal for buying more than one at once maybe all of us that are considering it could do a group buy like yetti96 said with them!!

Has anyone gotten a dealer to discount the extended motorer protection plan? If so how much? Where is the dealer located?

Has anyone done this? I'm getting close to the 50k on my '07 and when I total up all the repairs I've had (cold start rattle of doom, death and/or destruction, I'm looking at you) it's looking somewhat tempting. I hit about 47,000 miles at the 3 year mark, so the 6/100k plan sounds about right.

I wonder about them charging extra for stereo components, though. Do they know something we don't? But if any of that but the head unit goes it's just a fine excuse to go aftermarket.

I hit 49000 and went ahead and did it after Christmas. If you wait till the end of the month, sometimes they will lower the price more.

I did go with the XXL. It not only covers the head unit and GPS that I have, I also found out it covers climate control where the XL does not if you have it.
