Got burned by exhaust pipe
Got burned by exhaust pipe
My daughter and I both recently burned our legs on my mini exhaust. It does stick out enough beyond the bumper to get a touch while emptying out the hatch. Has this happened to many mini-owners? Perhaps, Mini should cut back the exhaust pipe. What about anyone with a MCS. That would be two burns!!
Ouch!!!!!! It hurts!!
Let us hear from you.

an 09 already has the short pipes...or certainly should have. I got a mailing about this almost a year ago and ignored it. During my last (first) service on my 07 last month they changed my exhaust tips to the new short ones cuz I forgot to tell them not to. I was gonna try and get them to just put them in the back and I'd sign-off as installed.
This wasn't a recall but was an action in response to some complaints.....
side bar question: On the 07 there was an option of a 'sport tip' for the exhaust. What happened if you had those tips?

DECEMBER 2008 -- BMW is recalling 28,450 MY 2007 and 2008 Mini Cooper S vehicles. The centrally located tailpipe extension protrudes slightly beyond the rear bumper and inadvertent contact may occur with a person's leg. If the tailpipe is hot when contact occurs, the person's leg can be burned. Dealers will replace the tailpipe extension with a new shorter tailpipe free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in January 2009. . This recall was the subject of an Engineering Analysis, EA08-020, conducted by the Office of Defects Investigation. 08V-657

I had this happen....well sort of.
Opening the boot while wearing shorts.
But I wasn't drunk, and my reflexes are such that I was able to snap my leg back before I was ACTUALLY BURNED.....lol.
How long do you have to hold you leg against the pipes to actually sustain a burn ?

Yes, I did get burned. Once. No, I was not drunk. Yes, I reacted very quickly.
When I heard about the recall I though you must be pretty dumb to do it. beginning of July I was unloading my MINI and did it. i have done it a few time since. It hurts every time and I feel really dumb when I do it.
My dealership asked if I wanted it switched out and I thought about it for about 5min and I was like well its new tips on year and a half old car why not. I don't know if you turn it down and the later decide that you want it if they wil do it without charging you.
I got mine switched out when in for a service to "fix" my cosmoline drips. they did not give me such an option to leave the longer tips. they said they had to do it. I was kinda shocked but I didn't really care either way. I bet if I would have continued to say no they would'nt have pressed the issue...
This happened to you with an R56? Geometries differ and exposure is not the same as one could easily be in an awkward position when contact is made -- like bent over getting something heavy from the boot. Further, depending on conditions, one does not have to be in contact long at all to get burned. BTW, exhaust pipes in an Arizona summer do not cool quickly. At. All.

Not an R56, but my pipes in same location as far as I know and yes, they do get really really hot
.....IMO MINI's are not like any other car, and as such should not be treated in same manner as one would say, a Toyota. Motoring is more than just driving around.... Sorta reminds me of back in the days of riding a motorcycle.... We had clubs, rides on twisties, meet and greets, and real hot babes AND exhaust pipes...
Buck up, a Toyota it's not.....
Hey... keep your legs away from my S tips...keep your feet out from under my wheels...and don't slam your hand in the door either.
But make sure you stick your arms and head completely out the window if you see me passing by.
