Joey mod and cops

So I had to take a trip down to NJ from CT tonight to get somethings from our sister retaurant. I madE a stop off at a 7/11 that I have been to many times growing up. Well I run into grab a pack of smokes and come out to find two cops checking out my MINI. They like the whole blacked out look. We got to talking and they started asking about the Joey mod. I told themthe whole process. As I finish on cop looks at the other and says " I think that illigal". The start to talk and aren't sure. I ask if thy are goi g to write me a ticket. They say "no" but some cops might. But they are still not sure if it legal. They thought it looked great just weren't sure on the legal part. I even showed them that the headlights work fine and are bright with the bulb upgrade I did.

Has anyone else come across this.

Not me. I have never head of such a thing. I can't imagine why it would be illegal. It doesn't interfere with any light function.

What about all of the cars that come with it stock (newer Corvettes come to mind, where the inside of the headlamps is painted body color)?

Cops were either pulling your leg or a bunch of dolts........

They be opening a big bag of worms IMO. Every 2006 and 2007 Honda Fit sold here came with body colored Joey Modded Headlights as standard equipment.....

not illegal. as long as you dont go painting the lense or reflector housings, then you are not decreasing output or changing the light pattern. I can see how they could question it. At least they were men enough to admit they didn't know. Some cops make things up as they go along. If you are ever hasseled, tell them its stock, chances are, they wont know.

They probably didn't understand that you hadn't painted any reflector area. If you had blacked out the reflector, it probably would be illegal.

The MINI 50 Camden special edition will have blacked out headlights, and it is rumored that the headlights will become generally available as a factory option.

Don't forget some of the Dodge Stealths or Mitsubishi 3000GT's have that also.

I agree with MUSHadd...at least they were willing to admit to the OP that they weren't really sure. I think that its pretty cool that they even bothered taking the time to even admire the car. It would be pretty cool just to have a regular conversation with a cop about my car.

I dont think that you have the right attitude. What do you mean "they think they are on TV"? What does that even mean? And then you say "What do they know?" What the hell do you know? How more ignorant can you sound? Why don't you go visit PO DiNardo's home in Jersey City and tell his widowed wife that he didn't know anything?? Be careful not to choke on any of that popcorn....you "Old Fart"

I work at Panera Bread right now, we have cops coming in all the time, and usually we talk to them about anything and everything. Even the potential legal issues with saran-wrapping someone's car (I had nothing to do with that, we have a rule at work, don't touch my car, I won't touch yours), that may or may not have been parked right outside.
