Is Royal Purple Harmful?
I was planning to change my oil today. I only have about 5k on this oil. I was planning to go to 7,500, but my oil is looking funny...like there's something at the end of the dipstick. It's not bad...it's just not what I'd consider normal. I'm not sure what it is, but I'm changing it and sending it off to BlackStone. I bought 5 quarts of RP (it currently has MINI oil from the dealer maintenance). I usually buy German Castrol. I was at Autozone, getting my GC, when I saw RP, remembered reading about it, and bought it instead. Just thought I'd try it. I've read a little more now. Did searches and whatnot. There's talk on forums saying it has too much "Moly" and is harmful to engines. They said the "Moly" clumps up in the oil and can damage engines? There are claims that it creates sludge in the engine. Some even said that Cummins banned it. If you google it, a lot of Amsoil sites pop up. Those sites down RP. One even brought up the Cummins ban. My question is, how much truth is in all this? I can't find any legitimate claims that an engine was ruined by RP. Or pictures of an engine sludged up by RP. I can't even find any official news on a Cummins ban...not even on the Cummins website. Are these all rumors? I'm not downing Amsoil, but I'm not a fan of stuff that is distributed the way Amsoil is...through "dealers" like you and me. If I had to buy it straight from Amsoil or a retail store I wouldn't be as skeptical. It could be great stuff, but all the websites trying to sell the stuff haven't convinced me yet. To be honest, I'm tempted to play it safe and exchange my RP for some trusty old GC. Any thoughts? Has anyone heard any of this stuff on RP?
PS I know this type of subject can become heated at times...and that's not what I'm looking for. Most of the time oil chat is subjective. I'm just curious if anyone has hard evidence that this is truth...like maybe a press release from Cummins. Or a site that has pictures of a RP sludge or clumped up "Moly." These are extreme claims and require extreme evidence if you ask me.

...my oil is looking funny...like there's something at the end of the dipstick. Describe please, if you are in a cold climate and don't get the oil up to temp, moisture can accumulate and create milkshake like goop
I'm changing it and sending it off to BlackStone. Good Idea

I can't find any facts supporting these claims, there's no press releases from cummins, no testing, as far as I can tell someone started a rumor that a few people ran with. From what I do know most synthetic oils contain "moly" (it's a lubricant) so I'm waiving the BS flag for lack of proof as well as the fact that there's a lot of vehicles running Royal Purple with no problems.
I use it for my Mini & BMW. Most if not all synthethics do not cause sludge under normal operating conditions and oil change interval and they do offer better protection against wear.

I know someone else that is crazy about Lucas. I might give it a try someday. I do have a strange question. The change was a piece of cake...first time that's happened.
After 2 and half years, I can finally go out and change my oil without a problem.
Anyway, It's always taken 4.5 quarts to get me to the full line. Well, after 4.5 quarts, it's still showing on the dipstick to be about 1/2 a quart short of full. I have an R53...does that sound normal? Am I safe to go ahead and pour the rest of that quart in?

I'm sure that the RP oil is more than good enough for our beloved Minis. A bit on the spendy side, however. If you'd like to have full synthetic protection for a lot less money, check out the post I just made, AutoZone is selling Valvoline SynPower Synthetic for $24.99 for 5 qts. AND a Fram oil filter:

Welp...I'm back with more questions. I assume we're all familiar with the temp gauge in the MINI. There's a line right down the middle which is suppose to be the normal operating temperature. Since switching to RP, my car usually runs right below that middle line...so it runs cooler than normal...then there are times when it runs right on that line. My first question is, why would my engine temp fluctuate? My second question is, does anyone know if an engine can be damaged by running cooler than it's supposed to?
Royal Purple is very harmful, if you drink it.
The engine in the 2nd Gen MINIs was designed for an ACEA A3 oil. The RP 0W-40 meets this, but it seems that the 5W-30 does not. So, the 5W-30 probably doesn't maintain the viscosity at temp/shear strength that the MINI branded 5W-30 does. It is difficult to find 5W-30 oils that meet ACEA A3.

Folks, you've GOT to stop over-analyzing everytHing about your car or you'll end up with massive ulcers and constant headaches. If the car is running slightly cooler than normal, NBD, it generally means that some friction has been eliminated and things are working a little bit cooler/better.
I'm SURE the Royal Purple is doing a terrific job at lubricating your engine and you have NOTHING to worry about. Stop stressing over the small stuff - remember the old saying "Don' t sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things..."
It's all good...

Sure your fine with rp, I use redline oil only, even during warranty period only redline. I would of tried amsoil but have never even seen a bottle of the stuff in person, so is AmSoil sold by like AmWay Cause no stores sell it.
+1 on Redline. I use 5W30 and I think it works well.
