Yeah, we had heard about that before we took our road trip so we made sure to take it down. That really sucks though.

The husband told me about some guy he works with that got a super expensive ticket for speeding in VA. I don't know how fast he was going... don't think he broke any land speed records or anything but I think it was around $1000 or more. Maybe a work zone or something? I don't have the details to say for sure.

I got one hours after getting my Mini. I had been, you know, "seeing what she could do" and that was fine. Then on my way home, on this street that i always drive down, i somehow didnt realize that i was going 45 in a 35.

I explained to the officer that it was my first day (hours in fact) with my car and i guess i couldnt get used to the Speedo in the middle of the dash. (I know, lame excuse.) He wasnt amused. It was the Campus Police so of course, he gave me a citation. (the campus police really have nothing better to do than give speeding tickets)

A few days later i decided to tell my parents. lol. but they were fine with it. Ive been lucky ever since!

Got pulled over speeding three times, and a dead headlight twice. Most of those times I wound up talking guns with the cop for 20 min. or so and got out of a ticket.

I always flirted my way out of tickets... but that was when I was younger and didn't have a husband as a passenger!

Guess I should clarify... fortunately I've never been pulled over by a woman. I would have just taken the ticket and moved on. Sorry... I have my limits.

Their used to be a fine for people that are residents of VA and got caught going over 20mph, so they would get a ticket for speeding plus another $1,000 or something crazy high like that. It was eventually changed because it was declared unconstitutional to only charge residents of VA and not everyone. It could be that, or like you said it could have been a work zone (Fine x 2), or a speed zone (extra $200) or maybe both, that could get you close to $1,000. VA loves to pull over, although does not seem to make people slow down, at least in the DC Metro area.

Does not stop me. I wanna go fast!

Only once in one of the MINIs. I saw the cop on the bike, but didn't recognise him as a cop. Good job I was driving the Justacooper, not the S.

I got pulled over on Thanksgiving this past year. I was coming home from a family get together on a unfamiliar road (well I've been on it before, just not often). I was driving along, enjoying the turkey high and listening to some good tunes when I look up and see a highway patrol car coming at me. I look down and see that my speed is a bit high, 70ish and this is in a 55. So I go ahead and start slowing down for the expected ticket and sure enough I see the cop turning around with his lights on in my rear view mirror.

I pulled over, turned the car off and all my info ready when he got to the window. I get the usual "Do you know why I pulled you over?" and "License, registration, and proof of insurance please." He goes to the patrol car and comes back and tells me that my insurance card is expired but that according to the computer I'm up to date but that he has to write me a ticket anyway but that if I show up to court with the proper card they'll give me a not guilty. Also he gives me a speeding ticket, duh, but he went ahead and marked it down on the spot to 64 in a 55 (from I think 73 in a 55).

Just when I think it's all over I get the speech about how I should slow down and that he didn't think these little cars could go so fast. I politely informed him that it's turbocharged and the speed can really get away from you. Then, and I'm not kidding, he asks "So what kind of mileage does this thing get?" I grinned and said around 30, if I keep the speed down. He smiled, got back in the car and left. I drove the rest of the way home with cruise control on.

I was pulled over just once in my former 2008 MCSa because the hatch wouldn't lock anymore and I had to drive with it open. The reason why I was pulled over is because the rear license plate is on the hatch and the cop couldn't read it.I explained to the officer that I was on my way to the Mini dealership to get it fixed. No ticket issued or even a warning fortunately.

He gives you multiple tickets on Thanksgiving and then before parting ways, he wants to chit chat about your gas mileage?? And I'm sure it was out of total respect (on his part) that he tells you he didn't think your car could go that fast. Ummm... yeah. Wow... what a tool! I would have wanted to tell him to look it up. (Don't know if I would have "said" it... but definitely would have wanted to tell him that!). Yeah, maybe I would have said it... after all... what else could he have given you a ticket for? Eating turkey while driving?

Yes, twice. Both times from city speed traps.

First one, got a ticket on the way home from work.

Second one (different city-different trap), the cop comes up to the window and tell me it was my lucky day: he was out of tickets and had to return to the station to get more.

No, surprisingly, as I drive my MINI in a ........ahem.............spirited manner.

Of course, I've only had one ticket in the last 20 or 30 years anyway (and that was such a bogus ticket!). I try to do my speeding at the Heartland Park roadcourse, where it's not only OK, it's encouraged!

City speed trap but cool cop.
12 over on a 5 lane where I normally never go
over 8 over, and people routinely pass me
going 20 over. But I had to get home to
catch the bus and I left work late.

12 over but I was sticking out in the front.
I hit the brakes and turned on the first side
street before he even pulled out. No reason
to make him chase me down in traffic.
By the time he turned around and turned in
behind me I had the flashers on, both windows down,
and the required information already out.

He didn't even ask, and I wasn't going to offer up
some lame-o excuse. "I have you clocked at
57". "yes-sir, that seems about right".
"Do you have a lot of tickets". "No sir, not in a long time."

He comes back in a couple minutes and says here is
your ticket I marked it down to 9 over so it won't
effect your insurance.

And funny they don't have that speed trap very often at all
and its of course the one day I'm going more than 7-8 over.
But, that's how it goes.

Not in the Mini. Actually I haven't gotten a ticket (knock on wood) in many years, despite some spirited driving. My buddy the Marine got me out of one when I was driving his Buick boat- the stupid speedo on these things waggles between 65 and 80 so easily. We were driving down to see the Marines memorial and WW2 Memorial in DC, and since he wanted to see them before he went to Iraq, the cop let me off. I always have more trouble in boats that float on the road than cars like the Mini, where you can tell how fast you are going!

As for that "turn on red" cops have a saying that if they follow you for 2 minutes they can find a reason to pull you over. People get nervous even when they aren't doing anything wrong. I'm sure they do it in case someone who is guilty of something like drugs, suspended license, drunk, etc will behave erratically, but it's an annoying practice. Next time, just drive the speed limit and ignore it, if the cop wants to pass you, he can! Don't give them a reason to pad the town coffers with your money.

I've only had one ticket, and it was totally bogus. I was 16, driving home from school in a really congested area (there's the community college, the high school and the middle school all on the same street), behind another car, both of us just past a stop sign and approaching another. Cop pulls me over, claims he got me at 40 in a 25. I politely countered that I was only going 30 at most, what with the other car in front of me and the stop signs and all. He wrote me up at 42 in a 25. I wanted to fight it, but my parents made me pay it and go to traffic school.

I had a funny encounter on the highway though. I passed my mom (I was driving my MINI), in her Acura TL, on the way to work and waved at her. I was driving pretty spiritedly, as she does herself. She called my mobile and left me a voicemail warning me I would get a ticket. When I got to work, I called her back and reminded her that talking on your mobile while driving can get you a ticket, too. A week later, she got popped for talking and driving.

I'm one that makes sure I never hit the brakes if a cop has passed me and is headed the other way just for that reason. If they got me for speeding there's nothing I can do... but if they see my brakes light up after they go by then I am suddenly looking suspicious. I've seen cops purposely go slow on the highway and everyone will stack up behind them. I don't have a problem with passing them as long as I am not speeding more than a couple over.

I was glad that the cop told me that the "No Turn on Red" was new... but that's definitely what they were waiting for... for people not to notice that they had changed it. My suspicion is that they've figured out lots of people haven't realized the change or don't see the signs. We went back and sat in the parking lot and watched and sure enough, they were pulling people over left and right for making that right turn on red. It's not such a great area and it's kind of dark at the intersection. I'm sure with the majority of people going there they find lots of other things like drugs, guns, suspended licenses, no insurance and all that other stuff.

Once. I was driving in the left lane on Hwy 1 in central California. Came up upon a large white pickup that was doing a non-spirited 60 in the left lane. I did a somewhat obnoxious quick speed up and pass on the right, and zipped back in front of him. The quick red/blue lights and I realized that the reason he was driving so slowly was likely because he recognized the unmarked (or undermarked) CHP vehicle behind me.

Got a ticket for failure to use a signal when changing lanes. Traffic school for me. (Did it online. I hope I learned a lot in those 25 minutes!)

Only once for now .. I have my front windows tinted which is illegal in NJ and i knew it so i couldnt complain and just paid the $54 ticket... BUTTTT i only have 50% tint on my fronts so it hardly looks tinted at all with 5% on the back windows... so when the officer came up to the car he made me roll he window up a bit so he could feel for the edge of the tint and meanwhile my passenger window was all the way up so he could have easily saw that window was tinted

I didn't want to hurt your feelings if it was you... so figured I'd check first.

The guy actually looks like a guy I saw barely getting out of a Minivan parked next to us at the store one time. My 6'5" husband was getting out of the back seat of the Convertible (top was down) and the guy made some comment about looking like the clown show at the circus. When I came back out he was also coming back out and he started talking to me about how he had some car that was smaller than a MINI when he was younger and he clarified that he was also MUCH smaller then. Wonder if it was the same dude... I think he would have looked like that in my Cooper.

Only twice so far, both times for speeding, and both times in the same place The first time the officer liked the car, appreciated my honesty and only wrote me up for 10mph over the limit. The second time I decided to fight it, went to court and had it knocked down to 5mph over, and got a $50 refund in the mail.
