GAS!!!
Gas is getting cheaper here in Las Vegas. I just filled up my Mini Cooper S today for $2.49 per/gal 91 octane. I'm averaging about 22mpg in the city. Anyone know how I can get better MPG's?
Why would someone "flame" you. It's the correct grade, after all. All gasoline comes from the same refineries and/or pipelines. The only difference is that some brands add a proprietary package of additives. Whether those additives actually give you better performance or better engine protection is very difficult to determine, as the formulas are all "proprietary", and finding an unbiased test of one brand against another nearly impossible. I stick with major brands to avoid any problems with adulterated gasoline, but other than that I get what's either cheapest or most convenient. I do stick with premium, as per the MINI manual.
Use high-quality brands
Field experience has indicated significant differences
in fuel quality: volatility, composition,
additives, etc., among gasolines offered for sale
in the United States and Canada. Fuels containing
up to and including 10% ethanol or other
oxygenates with up to 2.8% oxygen by weight,
that is, 15% MTBE or 3% methanol plus an
equivalent amount of co-solvent, will not void
the applicable warranties with respect to defects
in materials or workmanship.
The use of poor-quality fuels may result in
drivability, starting and stalling problems
especially under certain environmental conditions
such as high ambient temperature and
high altitude.
Should you encounter driveability problems
which you suspect could be related to the fuel
you are using, we recommend that you respond
by switching to a recognized high-quality brand
such as gasoline that is advertised as Top Tier
Detergent Gasoline.
Failure to comply with these recommendations
may also result in unscheduled maintenance.
Ethanol is an inexpensive way to raise the octane. The pump is supposed to display a message if the ethanol rating is over 10%, but I'm not sure how well that is enforced. I stick with Shell to be safe. I tried BP in a 1990 Integra and had problems with it stalling. The Acura service manager told me that the Integra was not designed for use with ethanol and too much could cause that problem.
Get an R56.

Shell Premium was still above $2.80 here yesterday. I'd rather not see prices come down too much. I recall the gas shortages of the 1970's and how soon everyone forgot about it when prices fell. As a result, we find ourselves in a world of gas guzzling behemoths that make our country too dependent on foreign oil, and contributing too much to global warming. For national security reasons, I hope gas prices stay high enough for people to remain serious about developing more efficient cars.

Isn't this kind of like wishing we don't find a cure for cancer because otherwise people will keep smoking? If there is indeed a magic bullet out there that will power all our vehicles instead of gas, someone will be working on it no matter what.
I remember seeing a few articles about us ( here in the states) not driving unless necessary that it would bring down gas prices because of low demand. Wonder how much cheaper fuel would be now if we had volunteered to do it instead of being forced to. Saw a lot of commnets about none of the ideas put out there would work. Tell me what you all think???????
Price of Gas!
Gas is getting cheaper here in the St Louis area, just $155.9 behind the house at Shell & Phillips. Ahhh, that's for regular, for 93 it is at $187.9

I made a decision to only use toptier gas in my new MINI based on some articles I read online and the fact that BMW and several other auto manufacturers support the addition of higher amounts of detergents in fuel. I have no idea if it truly is a benefit to the engine and don't fault anyone for wanting to get the best price on fuel.
I always, since Nov 2003 with my R50, used top tier gas. Then, this summer when we bought a new R56 I learned something from the Mini mechanic.
When I brought the new one in to have the alarm installed I mentioned that I noticed a little stutter, especially when I first started it and backed out of the garage. The service guy told me that since the price of gas has (had) been so high, many people were now using regular gas - thus the higher priced (91 and 93) were often just sitting in the gas stations tanks for overly long periods. He said that recently they've seen issues with the motor (don't remember where - but obviously where the gas comes into contact with the parts of the engine) and it looked as though the tanks were 5 years older than they actually were.
He recommended using Regular gas. I questioned this, given the manual. However, he said as long as it was with a major supplier, the detergent in the fuel would be the same and other than a slight decrease in gas mileage, I would not only not notice a difference, but that I would see an improvement (since my new Mini was sputtering a little.) He also said that he always only used Regular gas since he bought his MC in 2005.
Well, since August I have been using Regular. [I still feel a little odd about that though.] And it is just like he said.
The sputtering stopped and my gas mileage was down only about 1 mile (maybe less) a gallon.
How is that possible the lowest anyone has reported online for silver springs is 1.63 the lowest reported in the entire US is 1.48.
Mid 70's saw first a manufactured 'shortage' resulting in long lines and rationing followed by a rapid price rise to about $2.00 a gallon
(along with severe inflation of all prices).
After about a 50% improvement in fuel economy dropped demand, fuel price went back down below $1.00
and fuel economy was forgotten as demand for the now cheap imported oil increased.

would have kept the improvement in fuel economy driven and our throats out of the foreign oil suppliers hands.
Price stability for such a major expense as energy will go a long way in providing overall stability of our Economy.
80% of the revenue from such a tariff could be applied to development of domestic supply and alternative, renewable energy,
the other 20% could go to subsidise hardship for home heating, long commutes or others damaged.
I prefer to have price controlled by 'Free Market', but we have seen what happens with
a 'Free Market' controlled by Big Oil Company's who control 'supply' to drive 'demand' for their advantage.
So that works out to about $2.34 a gallon after converting from Canadian to US dollars and from liters to gallons. Not bad. Only about 10-19 cents per gallon more than my city. I thought it would still be around $2.99 per US gallon up there. That's pretty cheap! Bet you Canadians haven't seen gas that cheap in ages!
if it hits 99 cents I am getting out my camera!
Ditto a very bad feeling!
im filling up for 1.79 (premium)! loving it. Its funny and angering that when I was driving around a gas guzzling V8, gas was 4 bucks a gallon, and now that its so cheap it doesnt really matter anymore
$2.29 for 91 at Shell on Broadway in Oakland on Saturday. I bought Marissa in May and was dismayed to find myself paying for 91 at $3.99 a gallon. It's worth it though. $60+/- for a tank down to just +/- $40. No complaints here.
It's insane. I remember when I got my license and filled up my 83 Honda Prelude for the first time -- $13! I was so shocked. That was a day of tips from the coffee shop I worked at and I only worked like 3 nights a week.

I didn't realize it until today that I went a month on just one fill up.
Anyway exactly a month ago I paid $2.85 a gallon for super unleaded and today $2.04 a gallon for super unleaded. So 81 cents a gallon cheaper.
Regular unleaded is $1.79.

Gas in my area is getting mad cheap as well. Today my local Shell regular dropped to $1.71 p/g and the Premium was $2.09. I filled up with Premium for only $25 and some change. It was funny I saw a couple people with large plastic gas containers filling up gas. What do you guys think about that? Would it be safe to do that and store it in the back of my basement? My basement it unfinished.
