GAS!!!
I filled up yesterday at my local Krogers for $1.89 minus a ten cent discount for my amount I spend grocery shopping last month. It was under $25.00 total to fill up. I never thought I would see the day gas would be that low.
Let's be honest here, how many of us are really going to "drive sensibly"? I bet only one out of several hundred thousand will. I drove from Dallas to Oklahoma to visit my brother. On the highway, I was the ONLY one going 65 mph. EVERYONE passed me. I was forced to speed up to 73 to avoid getting hit. Quite a few were going 80 and several were just driving recklessly, darting between the lanes
. One guy in a Corvette nearly hit someone because he was going sooo fast. I think he was going nearly 90. Me? Frankly, I'm so tired of the hypocrisy. It seems like people are all screaming and crying about "high gas prices" but the same people refuse to change their habits or ditch their fat V8 SUVs. This year, I HARDLY saw anyone drive at the speed limit. They were always about 8-15 mph over it. I take the highway to work every day. The speed limit is 60 but EVERYONE drives 70. The speed limit on the city street in my neighborhood is 35 but everyone drives 42-45. That's all I'm going to say about this.

Funny... I made the same observation... one week I decided to hypermile and adhere to all posted speed limits... and as far as I could tell, the average speed most people drove was about 5 mph faster than the limit and that's probably a conservative estimate on my part. After that week, though, I decided hypermiling is not worth it and I feel much safer pacing myself with the masses.

Just did my first fill up Thursday. Premium 93 octane at a Top Tier supplier (www.toptiergas.com) here in Sarasota was about $2.65-69. Looks like the prices are down another couple of cents.
Did my first fill up Thursday also. Costco 91 octane in San Jose, CA $2.599 per gallon. 11.4 gallons for $29.80 total.
And before anyone flames me for using Costco gas I have been using it for years with 0 problems.

Something for everyone on this board to ponder: when I went to Oklahoma about two weeks ago, I was SHOCKED by how low the prices were. I think that state has THE cheapest gas in the nation. The prices were 30 cents per gallon cheaper than Texas and about 60 cents a gallon cheaper than San Francisco! Still, I saw signs at four different gas stations saying clearly "You MUST pay before pumping fuel." Another sign warned "We will prosecute for theft of fuel."
Gee, these people pay what possibly is the cheapest gas in the nation and they still have fuel theft problems?! I know a nice punishment: send them to Switzerland for a year and I get to keep their house and job for a year and enjoy the cheap gas since they're so tight! When they see gas prices there, they'll die of a heart attack!

$2.449 at North Swansea Shell today. 281 miles and 9.9 gallons. Mostly in-town back and forth to work. Less than $25 to fill-er-up! Sure beats the $75-$125 fills with my trucks at the start of the summer.
This was the first tank with the new K&N filter and it picked up 4MPG. The 34K mile filter was pretty dirty...

Why would someone "flame" you. It's the correct grade, after all. All gasoline comes from the same refineries and/or pipelines. The only difference is that some brands add a proprietary package of additives. Whether those additives actually give you better performance or better engine protection is very difficult to determine, as the formulas are all "proprietary", and finding an unbiased test of one brand against another nearly impossible. I stick with major brands to avoid any problems with adulterated gasoline, but other than that I get what's either cheapest or most convenient. I do stick with premium, as per the MINI manual.

I made a decision to only use toptier gas in my new MINI based on some articles I read online and the fact that BMW and several other auto manufacturers support the addition of higher amounts of detergents in fuel. I have no idea if it truly is a benefit to the engine and don't fault anyone for wanting to get the best price on fuel.
