Geico Insurance - interesting warranty add-on!

I just finalized my insurance coverage with Geico and was asked if I wanted "Mechanical Break-down" coverage. My first inclination was, "No, thank you" as I had Roadside service from MINI and my vehicle's warranty.

I asked to see some information on the coverage and what the premium was ($30.10 every 6 months for me in AZ)

Turns out this is an extended mechanical warranty! Looks pretty comprehensive as well! Here are some links:

http://www.geico.com/getaquote/auto/...own-insurance/

http://www.geico.com/claims/claimspr...akdown-claims/

Further, this coverage is for 7 years and 100,000 miles! During the time when the MINI warranty is in effect, this coverage will pay for anything that MINI will not.

At $30/6 months, it seems like a good deal. I've dealt with "extended warranties" before and they're not this affordable and have about the same headaches (have to call and get authorization before starting, etc).

Does anyone have any experiences with Geico Mechanical Breakdown claims?

11 days and counting till I pick up my Clubman!

Thanks
William

Yep - I'm trying to decide if I want to waive it till I get closer to the 15k. I'm not sure what it might cover that the MINI warranty wouldn't? Any ideas?

So what did you decide? I'm thinking of adding this myself.

My Clubman has a bit over 7,000 miles so far, so I still have time. No, haven't added it yet, but still considering it. I'm thinking of getting a coverage document from them just to see what it might pay for (or not)

I have it on my MINI (no idea how it got there, I guess Geico just added it when I got the new car).
However, when I called to inquire about canceling it and then starting it again when I got closer to needing it, they told me it was only available for new cars.

Given this it seems like a pure money maker for Geico.

Thanks for reminding me of this, I have Geico. I'll ask for the details. And definitely get it once I pass 15k, if it won't cover me when under it...

Hmm, someone do the time-value-of-money math. You don't need any mechanical warranty for the first 4 years or 50,000 miles, and Mini roadside assistance is there for the first 4 years, unlimited mileage.

You're paying $240 up front for insurance you don't need, so that you have the opportunity to have a limited mechanical warranty available starting 4 years or 50,000 miles from now, when you may or may not own the car, at $30/6 months or whatever they increase it to. Your choice, but the only way I'd consider that is if I were a Geico stockholder.

By the way, doesn't Geico have a bit of a history of donating money or radar units to police departments, then dropping their customers when they get a speeding ticket? Cavemen? Yeah, right. Neat commercials though, but perhaps a victim of overplay.
