Praise for a wonderful design

I was driving around yesterday and saw my car's reflection in a building window and thought "Damn, what a nice looking car". As I thought about it more, it is amazing that a car that has been on the road for over seven years still gets the looks and comments that it does. When my wife got an Element back in 2004, it got a few comments for a few months, but now it's just a Honda Element, no big deal. I expect my MINI to keep getting comments for years to come and I think that's really cool. It's a testament to great design in the current generation of MINIs and all the way back to the originals. I guess a classic is always a classic.

It's nice to hear I'm not the only nut case that does this...

That's one of the reasons why I love motoring through the city. And I do it whenever I see my MINI's reflection in the car or truck ahead of me.

I really like seeing the reflection in the back of that big huge SUV in front of me and thinking how much better my car looks and how much more fun my Mini is to drive and how i get to drive it more cause it does not cost me a weeks pay to go down the block for an ice cream.

Then reality set in and i realize "It's All True" and not a dream.

I mirror all of the above sentiments. I do the same things! When I pass a big glass building and happen to catch my MINI's reflection, I can't help but gawk. All those years I spent doing that with other people's MINI's and now it's mine that's catching my own attention. Sigh.

The same thoughts occurred to me last month. I participated in the MINI GWR attempt near Williamsburg VA. While we did not get close to the record but we did have 120+ MINIs show up. The highlight of the afternoon was a slow parade of 120+ MINI's around a huge campground. During the precession hundreds of people lined the roads waving, giving thumbs up, applauding, and snapping pics. The pool emptied and everyone came out of their campers and houses. It was amazing. I thought to myself "what other car would evoke a reaction like this"? How many people would stop and watch 120 Toyota Corollas or any other jelly bean car go by? There is simply something about a MINI that makes people smile.....especially the owners.

Just last night i came out of the grocery store with my girlfriend and we both just stopped a few meters away from Tobey...just stood there for a moment and thought and commented on how cool he looked sitting under the lamp post. I just cant stop staring at him and smiling, even after 3 months of owning him. i didn't even do that with my WRX.

Large suv's, tractor trailers, mirrored buildings, etc. I love them all, well at least I love seeing myself in thier reflection. Everyday I still walk off the elevator to get in my MINI after work and it puts a smile on my face just seeing it waiting on me. Nuts, yeah probably but I'm a happy nut.

It's funny that I still get positive comments with my "old" MINI. Sometimes when women say it's cute, or a nice looking car, I ask why and they just say something like "just because." Good design lasts forever, fad oriented design doesn't.
