I just read on cnet. com that Minis are sold out of coopers! Here is the article and a link to it.

According to BMW's Mini division, Mini dealers in the U.S. are almost completely sold out. Much like the Apple iPod, which the stylish little car was oft compared to when it was unveiled 2001, it appears demand has completely outrun the rate at which Mini can supply them.

Dealers report that at this point, 81 percent of Minis sold are preconfigured and ordered. Mini's Oxford, England, plant will boost production to the U.S., but only by between 2,000 and 3,000 vehicles this year.
It is also reported that Mini plans to expand its dealership network from 82 to 95 stores by 2011. With its only plant running three shifts, seven days a week and still falling behind demand, we can't help but wonder if Mini is going to let the waiting list get even longer or if the company has a trick up its sleeve to supply these new stores

Sorry for the duplication. I had not seen the story and it was new on CNET today. Still pretty crazy that they are sold out. Wait till that electric one they are working on becomes available!

As an early adopter now on my second MINI ('03 and '07)....yeah, I'm feeling a little smug right about now.

 

They maybe sold out, but at the same time if you are not picky with colors and options, you can find A LOT of used MINIs for sale.

I think if anything is rare or completely sold out from the factory are the JCWs and GPs.

 

I'm wondering how accurate are the dealer's online inventory list.

I checked the new car list from two dealers in my area and one lists 54 and the other one 27.

 

They're generally not at all accurate. My dealer said they had people calling all over the country about stuff that had been sold weeks ago but still were online. Didn't sound like the dealer could do much about it and was honestly pretty frustrated.

 

I just worry that, with increased production-to-meet-demands, they don't lose the quality or the personality in the process....
