Not getting a sense of a MINI community on the road
Yeah - me too - I love symmetry. If it's off a hair, I notice it. Frustrating at times indeed.
When on the way to teach class at the University, and still on San Francisco roads, I was approaching a MINI in the left hand lane. We were in bumper to bumper, stop and go, but not too bad in terms of moving.
I had time to survey the scene. The MINI had no plate, but one of those dealer placards in its place. So it was a new MINI.
I saw there were four people in it. The driver was sitting upright, concentrating on the road and I could tell he was nervous, being in a new car, traffic jam and this was rush hour.
As I passed him in the right lane, the shotgun passenger looked over and saw my MINI. He immediately lit up, smiled, waved then proceeded to tell everyone to look at my MINI.
I waved back and then waved my little 5" x 8" Union Jack flag that I had in the car. It's an antenna flag, but decided it would not hold up in the wind. So I have it on a stick ["mastette"
] in the MINI. The ultimate "wave" one can give fellow MINIs sighted on the road. Note: I don't wave that flag to just anyone, so if you get the flag wave consider it an honor... or a potentially embarrassing moment avoided by keeping your eyes on the road [aka ignore and pray for me.]
Anyway, that made them go nuts and I think the driver was wondering if he was supposed to get a little flag with his new MINI. I can just hear him asking the dealer "Hey, where's my little Union Jack flag?" Dealer: "That must have been a San Francisco nut case; we don't give Union Jack flags to MINI customers. Have you no dignity, no shame, no patriotism?"

I try to flash my lights first then wave, but not everyone really cares it seems. I've read in other posts a common thread of people just buying the car for it's economy and not for it's past racing and rally heritage. It is what it is, but in the long run, those who are in the know know just why they bought the car and enjoy every turn of the wheel. I have done all the requisite engine and suspension mods and I've driven my 05 S cross country to participate in various MINI events as well as up to the Dragon four consecutive years and the fun just keeps coming.
On my "whirlwind" tour with some of the Tar Heels club this weekend -- from Richmond to Canton, NC to the Dragon, back to Cary, NC and then home (whew, I'm tired!) I think I must've passed at least 20 MINIs in different states (not including the MINIs on the trip with me) ...the cool thing was that, even though lots were on the OTHER side of the highway barrier, they still waved back!!! Windows down, sunroof open, music blaring, and lights on made it easy to wave, at least on my part, even at ** MPH.
damm yankee
went from connecticut to myrtle beach sc.two weeks ago. i didn't see a lot of minis on the ride down (I95) but saw a least a half a dozen while in myrtle beach. my waves were met with looks that either said - he has tow heads or Whats that DAMM Yankee waving at.
If you're just visiting you're just a Yankee, if you're like me and have moved here permanently then you are considered a Damn Yankee...
Waving was a given back in the 70's with my motorcycle and 80's with my Jeep CJ7. I will try and be a good waver when I get my new MINI in about a month or so.
But here in California you need to be careful, flashing your lights except in certain situations became illegal last year due to gang activity in Southern CA. Also Honking your horn in a non emergency situation became illegal at the same time due to road rage incidents. Sad but that is the way it is. So waving is what is left for us. And also we now have a hands free law for cell phones but I see LOTS of people talking on their phones.

We took Reg out for a little drive (3 1/2 hours out!) this afternoon, along Highway 1 and saw a handful of MINIs along the way. Waved to each one, and only got one wave back: a couple in a black convertible (both waved!)
You know, it really makes you feel great when someone waves back!
Reg loved the twisties we took him on, but didn't like the slow Honda SUV ahead of us that DIDN'T like the twisties. He wanted to go faster!

Thank you for your well wishes
of driving a bear running out of the woods and into my car was a first for me too.
I think she's more mad at the bear for damaging the MINI than anything else.
MINI drivers in the DFW area don't seem to wave much either. I always wave when I see a MINI. It's hard not to get excited when another MINI driver pulls up next to you. I get a lot of the WTF looks, too. I just assume they're not in the know. The people who do wave back make it all worth it.
My experience is that some wave, and others do not. Sometimes other Mini drivers just don't see me. I'm sure that I've missed some who waved at me. My advice is wave to all the Minis you see, and have fun.
Boy talk about taking the MINI out for a little drive.
+1 -- I was gonna saaaay, thejokell!!! I thought I drove a lot last weekend!!!
So far I've had my MINI for 2-1/2 weeks and have passed several MINIs - only one wave to date. I had a very brief nod, at least it appeared to be a nod and that's it. I'm still trying not to get discouraged and I keep waving even if no returns the wave but seriously PA folks...come on!
Now I'm wondering if it's because I have an AB/AB color scheme and I'm not quite as flashy as some other MINIs. Maybe people don't notice me. I'm searching for reasons here other than the fact that all of these drivers bought their MINIs for the MPG and not the culture.

It's getting a little "cold" even here in Honolulu. I remember smiling faces and waves all the time when I first bought my '04 JCW S. Now its mostly puzzled looks when I wave at MINI. At least I haven't gotten the finger! Yet!
I'm guessing the fuel ran out of the "Thumbs Up
" marketing ploy!
