Garage Almost Done
Garage Almost Done
Almost done with the garage. I can't wait to get back to work tomorrow so I can finally relax!
I had previously coated the floor (in 2000) with Valspar epoxy and it was showing its age. I had also done a fairly rough touchup on the sheetrock and painted it a tan color. Also in 2000 I popcorned the ceiling and added a couple shelves. After 8 years the entire garage was getting long in the tooth and really needed a refresh.
Three weeks ago I sanded the old epoxy off the floor. Not a fun job, but really not bad to do even with a 7 inch sander.
Last week I recoated the floor with a full garage kit from epoxy-coat.com. They offer 100% solids and the price was right. I have 520 square feet and a full garage kit was perfect. I did buy three extra bags of fleck from Home Depot.
This weekend I was just going to look at paint and ended up painting on Saturday and touching up the edges on Sunday. Really wasn't that bad. I tried an 18" roller and wow what a difference. I won't paint with a regular roller again!
The color is called "linen". Its a light gray with a green tone to it. It blends well with the floor. It's a flat paint so it hid any defects in the wall well.
Then I added the Gladiator rack from Lowes on the right side. Not a bad system. Easy to install and the price isn't too bad.
I'm adding MonsterRax over the garage door next week. (4'x6') I liked the quality of these rack so much I decided to get a dealer agreement with them so I can start selling them to my clients in my property management company. Nice!
Overall I'm pleased with the results. I was going to put my air compressor in the ceiling but ran out of motivation.
I've got cable TV and a little radio in the garage along with heat so I could pretty much live there if I cross my wife!
Overall I think I've got $500 and a few days of labor. Worth every penny!
Any ideas what to use for baseboard? I had a vinyl adhesive baseboard last time around, but it failed miserably in the heat. Looking for a better solution or product. Not sure what color either. Thinking black at this point.

Thanks. The blue ladder was a score. I was dumping some stuff at a construction dumpster (uhh I had permission) and in the dumpster was the blue ladder with a missing bolt at the top. I took it home and replaced that missing bolt and there you go....
They must have had some safety rules at that jobsite that said if the ladder was missing parts then throw it. Worked for me!

Looks great man good job!
I can't wait to have a house of my own where I can just go nuts on the garage and make it all to myself. But I must say I'm amazed at how empty your garage is. You know alot of people use the garage for extra storage...not you!! The Gladiator racks are the cabinets behind the Mini? Didn't really get a good shot at it. And what are the Monster Racks you speak of...got a pic? Also where is your air compressor? next to your toolbox? That would be sick if you ran the air hose to the ceiling and had a pull down wheel. Or run hard lines to each side of the garage and have quick disconnect fittings on each side. Ahhh the pleasures of owning your own home.
You need a refrigerator in there, and a sink. I wish I had sink in the garage...
Get some MRE rations so you really can live in the garage if needed.

OT: We buy from here for our earthquake readiness (MRE) supplies. Great selection, great prices.

OP: Great job on the garage!

I'll pass on the fridge for now. The door to the house walks right into the kitchen so I'm set.
As far as "where's all your stuff"... A month after I built the house I put up a shed so I didn't have to store my lawn stuff in the garage. (42" walk behind mower, tamper, snow blower, etc...) Needless to say the shed is crammed to the rafters with tools. I like it that way, I can keep the garage for cars only.
The MonsterRax are pretty cool. They hang in the space over the garage door and can hold 600 pounds each. (4'x8'). They have as much cubic footage as a standard closet. Tough market to sell a house today, so I'm just going to increase and utilize the space I have. I'll post pics next week. I should have them up by Sunday.

Baseboard: 1x4" pine, prime and paint black, install and grout edges with paintable grout. Done, and on a budget.
Looks great... but you no gots kids... I see no bicycles, toys, tools...

On the left side the sheetrock is flush with the raised concrete footing. So the baseboard could sit right on the floor.
On the right side the sheetrock is set back about 2" on the footing, so the baseboard would have to sit on the concrete footing which is higher than the floor by quite a bit. I think it would look crooked. That detail is throwing me off. I'll take some pics this weekend and see if you guys can give me some ideas so that it looks even.
Oh and I have a 9 month old, so I'm enjoying the clean garage for a little while longer until the trikes and other fun toys come out. Actually looking forward to buying her a little battery powered car. She'll be stylin for sure!

I got one of the MonsterRax up this weekend. Just too much going on to get two up. This one is 4'x6' and is hanging 20" from the ceiling. I've got one more identical one to put up on the other side of the door to match. Should give me a ton of space. They sure are beefy racks. If you've ever worked in a warehouse these are very similar to the pallet racking systems a lot of warehouses use.

Looking good !! I almost went with epoxy but I worried about the long term and it's ability to stand up over the years... peeling and chipping. So I went with the tiles.
I'm probably showing my age and newer epoxies are probably very dependable.
And I'm with you on the "stuff goes in the shed, cars go in the garage" mentality. I hate a cluttered garage. Yours... sweet ! Even less clutter than mine.
Again, great job. Looks fantastic !

Looks great. Wish I could get mine down to the point it could look like that. Worked last weekend and got it a little more an shape. Unfortunately, sheds in my neighborhood have to match the house (= lotsa money) and don't want to invest that much in a house I'll be moving out of in no more that 2 years. (though I'll probably have spent that much of Gladiator GarageWorks stuff by the end).
Enjoy the zen of a car only garage

Thanks guys.
I'm not 100% sold on epoxy yet since my first app in 2000 failed after 6-7 years. That wasn't the greatest stuff and I did a lot more homework this time. I found that most commercial applications are using 100% solids which results in a much thicker coating which in theory should take more time to wear.
At roughly $.60 a square foot it seemed like a good risk. I love the look of racedeck tiles, but the cost was too much for me.
I got lucky with the shed. Our covenants weren't fully established when we built the house so I popped up a shed pronto. I painted it the same color as the house, roofed it using the same shingles and threw it all back in the trees out of sight. Lucky I got it put together when I did because now the covenants are much stricter.
Mine is grandfathered now, plus it's so buried in the trees you could be 20 feet in front of it and not know it's there.
I'd love to move since we're running out of space with three cars and a 2.5 car garage, but with the market like it is I'll just stay put a couple more years. I think cleaning up the garage and adding in some great storage space above the garage door will add some value to the house, plus it lightens the storage load in the basement. I'm losing some storage space down there now that I'm finishing off 2/3 of that space for a kids play room and extra bedroom.
