A Duhh moment
A Duhh moment
Brought to you by Pep boys:
I was browsing around pep boys near my house looking for Mini cleaning supplies. I wandered past the wheels and rims section and starred into some lovely motegi 6 spoke gloss black w/ silver lip. I apparently was looking to hard because as soon as i turned around there was Walt Disney standing right behind me. "Can i help you find anything son?" He asks very nicely. Knowing i might be standing next to an automotive genius i thought of the only cool question i could "How much do these weigh?" He looks deeply at me, smiled, and said "What?" A little confused, may be he has blown hes hearing with all those runs down the drag strip with his sweet 67 El comino, so i sat again louder "HOW MUCH DO THESE RIMS WEIGH?" Now the puzzled look is on his face " I don't understand why do you need to know how much they weigh? No one has EVER asked me that before." He yells over to the other guy. This kid walks up and he looks like he has been turning wrenches on his b18 for years. The old guy asks the kid " Do you know how much these rims weigh?" Now Honda kid is confused, he looks at me and asks plainly "why do you need to know how much they weigh?" I thought for a moment if i should educate these Automotive geniuses on the important s of un-sprung weight on a car but i just gave up right there. The people at pep boy are friendly and nice but that was a real duh moment.

I work at Advance Auto Parts and believe me, I get these more often then I should. And, Pep Boys anymore is a waste of time and effort. Need a lawnmower or a mini bike, go there. Need parts? Come to us. Lets put it this way, they come to me when they don't have parts because their warehouse is so FUBAR. But, my best moment? When the 'tard from the Aamco we have next dooe told me that cold cranking amperage plays no role in how much power a battery has.
I've shared this one before on a different thread, but it's still my favorite.
I called up a NAPA Autoparts store to see if they had any oil filters in stock since I wanted to change my oil.
Conversation went like this:

Conversation went like this:
Me: Hi there, I was wondering if you had any oil filters for a 2005 MINI Cooper S
Him: For what kind of car?
Me: Uh... a 2005 MINI Cooper S
Him: (typing in background) Uh... lets see... who is that made by?
Me: Um...... MINI
Him: No... like... who makes the car? You know, Chevy? Ford? GMC?
Me: Uh... Yeah. Still MINI.
Him: No. Sir, I need to know who makes the car. What is the Make?
Me: It's still MINI. But if you need to know, BMW owns the brand.
Him: Yeah. There you go. That's what I'm looking for. Okay... I have one for an M3 and a Z4. I don't think BMW makes anything called a mini though, sure it's not called something else? They usually have numbers in their models.
Me: Nevermind (click)

While it's depressing how few people know what a Mini is, I'm comforted to know that I'm not the only one out there having the "Who's On First"-like back-and-forth conversations about my car's make...
It's a Mini Cooper.
Who makes that?
Mini.
No, who make it?
Mini makes it.
No, what is the company?
Mini is the company.
And on and on it goes. I've had this conversation way too many times (most painfully with my former insurance agent who didn't think she could insure a car if I couldn't tell her who made it...)
