Buying a New Key

I did a search, but could not find my answer. I bought my Mini used and it only came with one key. I would like to buy another one, but as you all know they are not cheap at the dealer. I see some on ebay, but don't know that I can take it to the dealer to get cut and programed. I found one that is blank and can be cut, but do you guys think the dealer will go for it? I would rather not have to spend $300 on a ney key.

Wow, I'll check again. If there's such a difference from dealer to dealer, maybe I can contact your dealer and have them ship it to me. I'm sure all they need is the VIN.

The key is not cut at the dealer. They are ordered with the last 7 digits of your VIN and cut at your dealer's main PDC then sent overnight to your dealer. The BMW/MINI dealer I work at requires you have a picture ID and proof of ownership of the vehicle, we make a copy of each and file it with the key order.

Thanks that makes sense. So all these keys being sold on e-bay can't work, right?

I've wondered the same thing about the eBay keys, how did they get a blank one to begin with?
I doubt your dealer can do anything with it, but you can call and ask.
