What will happen if you run real low on fuel is that the car will go into limp mode first, then shut down shortly there after. Hopefully this happens before the injectors run dry, because then bad juju does happens; hard to re-prime the injectors if they run dry.
The MINI does not have a reserve per say, just an ECU that hopefully does not let it run dry of fuel.
The other reason for not running the tank down that low is that any crud in the tank is more likely to get drawn into the fuel lines.

The so-called "reserve" isn't really a reserve. What they mean is that when you see the little warning light (or, in the case of a 1st Gen MINI with Nav, when the last fuel gauge light turns red), you have just entered "reserve" territory... 2.1 gallons left, if I recall correctly.
It's silly to even call it a reserve. A warning light at 2.1G is not the same as an actual reserve tank!
So how did you get it to -13??????
And Yes I start panicking when I get it down to like 5 and more when it goes back and forth from 5 to 0 and back up to 5, 6, or 7 then back down to 0 ...I'm trying not to go that low but sometimes my lazyness and running late to work will do it.
wow down to 7 and it died??????????????????????
That's not good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I guess I won't let it go that low anymore.............sorry I've been so bad to my baby I don't want it to get sick one of these days :( Ya'll must think I don't like my mini :(

Lowest I've been down to was 9 miles on my way back home from MTTS. Thank god for downhills and coasting! I was sweating bullets
thinking that I wasn't going to make it to the nearest gas station - to boot in the desert & 110+ degrees outside...

I don't think the OBC is all that accurate, even less so when fuel is low. I seldom let mine get below a 1/4 tank. When I was comuting 100+ miles a day in the wilds of Manitoba, I never let it get below a 1/2 a tank. Getting stranded out on the highway at -35 F or C is not a fun thing

A long term consequence of letting the tank get that low is that the fuel pump is in the gas tank and is cooled by the fuel. If you repeatedly let the gas get that low the pump will over heat and fail. Then you have the expense of replacing said pump.
I have been down below the 0 to the dotted lines twice. I have never had a problem that I knew of, and can say there was alot of praying involved getting to the gas station....I didn't mean to, just didn't notice I guess. I try to really pay attention to it now. It's that getting used to the gauges being in the middle thing. Still, I know it's probably not good for something...
