Fans wont shut off :(
Fans wont shut off :(
hey everyone, recently i brought my girlfriend to the airport, and parked my mini inthe parking garage, and took her inside. about an hour goes by and i go back to the car and my fan is running on high.
. so i drive back to my house wich is about 20 mins, temp guage is normal. get home and go inside, hour goes by and i go out to check on the car, fan is still on high! so i get the hose and lightly mist cool water on the radiator, fan stays on. so i go back inside, another hour goes by, i come out, fan is still on but not on high, so i get in and try to start the car, no go, the batery is dying
. so i try to jump the mini, and as soon as i touch the cables to the car the fans kick on high!!. anybody know what my problem is or could be? temp sensor? fan relay? fan itself? please help, it's my only transportation. any help is appreciated.

I dont know which will help but here are a few links if you haven't seen them yet. The first one is a power steering pump. the second is about a cooling fan.

On previous cars, I would have claimed that it's a cooling fan relay problem (one that I've fixed a few times before on Mazdas / Toyotas). On the MINI, the problem is usually solved by the dealerships (where I've read about this same problem) by a complete replacement of the cooling fan.
There are a couple of posters on MetroplexMINI.org with this exact same problem right now. It seems more common on the '05 for some reason (though it could be sampling error).
Edit:
Just went and read the link from SuperFun... Funny that a low battery could make it happen, but it makes some sense. There is also some good diagnostic info on that link to help you figure out if it is the relay or the entire fan assembly.
