clutch question

Stupid question, but google failed me so now it's your guys' turn. Are you able to shift into and out of gear without the clutch when the car is OFF? I didn't think so but my dad said you could and took my shifter and shoved it into gear when we were getting out. Is this alright on the tranny or not? (as you can tell i'm only a surface deep car nut when it comes to drivetrain)

Thanks,
Zach

Yes, you can. The point of the clutch is to disengage power from the engine to the transmission, but since your engine's off, there's no need.
