Pardon me if this has been asked/answered already, I searched to no avail.

I have a question about a set of Wheels/Tires for AutoX only.

Currently, I run Kosei K1's with Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 (LOVE them) and I want to keep them for street fun. (Right officer?)

I'm looking at getting a set of 15" light wheels (recommendations welcome) and Falken Azenis. 205/50-15 size for use as autocross only. I like the balance of the Azenis from a price/performance standpoint. I want a good grip but I'm not Michael Schumacher. I'm out there for fun.

Am I going down the right path?

Autocross only I would go with true r compounds Hoosier, Kumho, Yoko or the soon to be released Avon. V700s are more than an Azeni but 2 seconds faster on a 60 sec course. Would you spend double the cost of an Azeni for 2 seconds?
As for the rims 15x7 Volk TE-37s, CE 28Ns or SSR Comps all are very light but a little pricey. Kosei K1s or Enkei RPF1s are light but not as much $$$.
At the risk of sounding like a 'do a search ****' Check H and G stock Forums, there is a lot more info there. Hope this helps and good luck.

Noting your Sig specs. You have listed a pully mod. This would place you in SM or "Street Modified" in SCCA Solo. You would be better off with Hoosiers or other super sticky DOT race tires in that class. If your trying to be competitive, your embarassment will be minimized with better tires. There is a lot of very fast cars in SM.

or

You could change out the pully and run STX with "street tires". The Falkins Azenis RS are one of the hot tires in this class.

or

You could do what you want, don't worry about trophies, and have LOTS of fun anyway.

As NIKE says "just do it!"

Just do it, but don't misclassify yourself. Make a phone call to a man by the name of Doug Gill at SCCA HQ in Topeka Ks....toll free number on the web site.... http://www.scca.org. Your adjustable track rods also have something to do with the class you run.....
Doug is THE technical Solo man and he can tell you where exactly you belong.....me i get to run ASP with PKT RKT..........but hey....I won't complain until I know how to drive......

Jim -

The Pulley is the big killer for class for you (I know because I finally bit the bullet and had one installed.... YEEEEHAAAAA). It will bump you automatically to Street Mod (SM). I'm running a set of 205 / 50-15 Kumho Victoracers on an old set of TSW EVO wheels. Not the lightest 15 inch wheels out there - but what I had available at the time. I'd suggest finding a set of Rota model Slipstream or Grid wheels (they are both light and fairly inexpensive) or a 15" set of the Kosei's you currently have, and slap some Kumhos or Hoosiers on there, and just have fun. The MINI is going to be outclassed by the serious SM machinery out there, but no one will have more fun than you!

Thanks everyone!

Here in Madison the classing is a bit different for the local Sports Car Club; they're not SCCA. (www.madisonautocross.com)

There are classes based on penalty points for your mods. Stock, Prepared, Modified, and Race.

I am running an S and I'm in the Prepared class based on my mods.

I don't care about trophies or points, I care about improving my times and having fun. I am enrolled in an upcoming driving school to change the nut behind the wheel.

Thanks!

mjolnir,

For SCCA solo 2 you are in SM class based on the pulley alone. You may run with any wheel.
Best would be 15x7 lightweight about 9 pounds but the cost of rims would be in the $285 up range.
I was looking at the Volks but my local shop wanted $1500 just for rims.

Based on prepared class just check the rules on wheels that are allowed.
If you can run 15" then 15x7 with 225/45-15 tires would be best but not available for every tire.
The problem with Hoosiers is the cost and that they are less durable for beginners. I choose Kumho victoracer V700 ($119 each at tirerack.com in 205-50-15) to learn on this season and will move up if I find the need to. Azenis would also be a good place to start on a budget.

If you just want to run then the wheels you have are OK also but you will wear them. The Kumhos or Azenis would be better.
