depends on what you mean better. New car is lighter, but if your running old JCW it doesnt matter. Whats your objective on track?

I have pretty extensive experience at many tracks with a well modded '02 MCS and wonder how close the new version would be in lap times..........

thanks

Really depends upon the mods and the track. I would assume that the '02 is pretty close in HP to the new car, so depending upon your suspension.....

I run a 06 JCW with stock engine and gearbox, but all suspension and handling adjustments are aftermarket. I consistently outpace "high modified" 230+ HP MINIs....but thats mainly because of driving abilities...

Having dirven the new car and my car, I think the differences between the 2 cars in stock form are pretty close, with the new car handling a bit better and pulling off the line about the same...

I've seen this unfold at NHIS, Lime Rock, and Watkins Glen HPDEs. A stock R56 appears to be a bit faster than a stock / or even "gently" modded R53 (pulley/intake etc.)

Reasons? Stiffer R56 suspension, somewhat smoother power delivery with the turbo are possibilities. The cars are defintely close enough that a better driver in either will pass a lesser driver in the other.

I think right now the older model is the way to go. There are so many aftermaket parts available and research done on the track with them. The new model doesn't have that support yet. We already know the weak links to the supercharged car. i'm sure the MINI track rat community would be happy for you to find out the weak links to the new car. It's more a question of funds and frustration.
