JCW MCS was using 17" OEM wheels at 24hr Nurburgring!
I notice that JCW recent participation at 24-hr Nurburgring I notice that they use R90 & S-lites for the race and not of those light aftermarket wheels, though they use aftermarket spoiler. So probaby the weight of the R90 & the "classic" S-lite wheels is not bad after all.

I would bet that since JCW has MINI's blessing, there are some requirements placed on them in terms of the exterior modifications they are permitted to do to the car.
The R90's and the S-lites are really heavy wheels. No one with those resources would select them without some other reason.
is it too early in the morning to be this cynical?

Unless they believed they would hold up better over a 24hr race. I know I've hit potholes in and around chicago with my S-lites (S-heavies if you will) that would have made previous BMW wheels I've owned bend like macaroni.

Nope. You're probably more right than wrong about the N'ring car, given that's the very reason we have to run the S-Heavies on our Belgian MINI Cooper Challenge cars. And to boot, most of the series cars were delivered with white S-Heavies which make then IMPOSSIBLE to keep presentable much less clean.
