Depends on how long you want to spend where...

But some highly recommended things:
1) The Blue Ridge Parkway. Since you're driving north anyway, might as well drive ALL the way up the BRP and the Skyline Drive (in Virginia, through the Shenandoah Valley).
2) LOTS of places to stop and things to see along the Parkway. You can spend 3-4 days making this part of the trip if you want to stop a lot... zillions of nice hiking trails, lakes, etc.
3) At the northern end of the Skyline Drive is Luray, Virginia, home of some very nice caverns.
4) The Great Smoky Mountains National Park - GREAT hiking trails with spectacular views. The Dragon is actually the southern boundary of the Park.
5) Gatlinburg, TN - just west of the Smokies - a great aquarium (Ripley's), other cool/fun stuff to do, though some stuff may be closed for the season.
6) Helen, GA (about an hour and a half south of Fontana) - beautiful little "faux German" village, with pretty German styled buildings and several German restaurants and lots of shops.

And a bunch of other stuff...

I am headed to Rock Hill next week to visit the fine folks at Innova Discs, makers of the best disc golf discs. They are donating a bunch of stuff for the tournament, as well as lending us a bunch of loaner discs to use. Should be pretty cool. We are going to have some SWEET prizes for the tournament! (And yes, I am playing, no, I am not accepting prizes, although my partner certainly will!) If you need some help deciding to play in the tournament, let me share with you one of the prizes. Custom Gauge Face Kit from outmotoring.com. Need I say more? I don't think so. And there's a few of us going to Rock Hill to practice at the Winthrop disc golf course, and all are invited to join us! We'll start around 2:30. Wanna go? Let me know, and I will give you the details.....

Oh I wish disk golf was popular here! I have never heard of it here in Canada, and I will have to check to see if I can find a course up here as I would love to win! HAHA

Check THIS out. Looks like Canada (which, I know, is a BIG country) has at least 39 courses...

I went across the street, (almost literally) to Reedy Creek Park in Charlotte and played the course the other day, and although I pretty much stink, it was still a blast! I think once you get the hang of this, it could be pretty addictive.

I'll be heading to the course on Sunday, to get some pointers from Jason, at this point, I don't really know what I'm doing except tossing the things and finding them in the woods afterwards, taking a stroke to get back to the fairway and repeating the process... ;-)

msss

alright guys and gals, need your input. Fontana finally called me about our eating arrangements, and I have a cool new option for Friday night. They are willing to cater a barbecue dinner with all the fixins for the same cost of $10. That will cut out the craziness associated with doing the cookout there. What do you guys think about this?
also, The Grill will be open for us Saturday night. They have all kinds of food, including burgers and such.

Sounds good to me. That way you don't have to try and figure out how many Dogs and Burgers to buy!!

ALSO: On the random doubles disc golf, just how random does this work. Some of us will be at a disadvantage right from the beginning of course..( this means me )

I think it's safe to say the barbecue is the best idea. We'll just plan to do that. Plus it will give us more time to just hang out. Thanks for all the input and comments!

Wow, even the fricken Yukon has one.. THere used to be one at Six Mile Provincial Park where we camped a lot in the past, it was up on a hill, hard to get to, they may have removed it...

Correct me if I am wrong, just a bar with a basket on it right?

$10 sounds like a smokin' deal... Giddy up!

Still kickin' around the Disc Golf idea... Looked it up on the net and there is a course close to the house. I think we might make a family outing this Sunday afternoon and try it out!

Hey Dave what's up with taking a stroke to get back to the fairway. Where I'm from that's called a "foot wedge".!!! haha!!!

By the way, the main reason it's $10 instead of say, $7, is that we only will have maybe 75 people there, and the guy at Fontana made it seem like that was a small number to cook for. Seemed like a lot to me. I don't wanna cook for 75 people. I mean, I would if I had to, but I'd rather not. Roadfly, glad you can make it. I'll put you down!
