Speaking of trade in values is the BLACK BOOK link seem legit? I have heard car dealers mention the Black Book more then the others.. NADA, KBB, Edmunds...
I did take my 2010 to CARMAX and WOW what a low ball, I was expecting it but damn.. My MINI devalued more then my Jeep Rubicon.. and they usually share the same depreciation or very close...

The BLackBook brand is used by dealers. They compile wholesale data from dealer auctions. The book is updated very frequently, its either monthly or weekly. In addition the larger dealer auctions, (Mannheim etc), have online data that provides the same type of data if the dealer subscribes to it.

Minis are crap for resale. The reason being that most have so many options that never retain their value over time.
If you have a stock standard cooper with no extra options, the resale value is good to above average. But the problem is that EVERYTHING is an option on a mini. Armrests, interior trim, seats, steering wheel, audio, lights, stripes, tires wheels, etc. etc.
Many other vehicles come standard with many of the features that mini lists as an option. This makes every mini a custom to some extent but also destroys the resale value.
Only way to not lose 40% on your JCW in two years is to find another buyer who wants your particular JCW. A dealer won't give you anywhere near a reasonable offer.
I know others say that this is true for all cars but it isn't. For instance I was buying and trading in diesel F-250s every 3 years. My depreciation was only $1500 a year. In otherwords, I was trading my F-250 diesel for a brand new F-250 for $4500 every 3 years. I did this over a period of 12 years.
But most mini dealers will depreciate a JCW $9000 as soon as it drives off the lot.
