Which Brake Rotors??

So, I did my rear brakes myself with some rotors a friend at the local service station gave me, NAPA parts, $20.00, been on the car for about 30 days and the hats are rusting. This is not acceptable.

You go to various sites and it seems like the JCW is an anomaly, not many choices. Brakes aren't something to skimp on so I want a reliable brand but I want them to not corrode! The stocks held up fine since 2009, the front rotor is still got life.

What are my options? I don't track the car but I am one to like the flash look of cross drilled, but solid is fine was well, help!!

I put some cheap Centric brand rotors on the back of my MCS this past spring when I did the rear brakes. I had the same issue as you with rusting the last time I used cheapo rotors on another car, so this time, I took a small brush and some gloss black oil-based paint (Rustoleum) and painted the hats (while on the car). They've held up great and still look good. No rust. Alternatively, you could tape them off and spray them when off the car, which is what I did to my front rotors. This is basically what is done to the rotors that come with pre-painted hats.

The alternative would be to take them off and get the coated type, but you'll probably pay more than twice the amount for the rotors. Not worth it IMO. The paint works fine. Generally speaking, even the cheap brake rotors meet quality standards of OEM (at least), so I don't think that spending a bunch of money on rotors necessarily makes them better....just my opinion. For street driving, the cheap ones work fine.

BTW, I see you are into vintage Hondas, among other things. I have a couple old Hondas in my garage as well. A '74 CB550 and a '76 CJ360. Love the old bikes! You don't see many of those SuperHawks for sure....pic?

I thought of painting but I don't want it to look hokey, also, we're DINK's so I don't mind spending a bit more cash. I've seen a lot of Centrics online sold with black hats already, they were reasonable.

As for the Superhawk, I might be an idiot, how do I insert a picture on these boards??

You're not an idiot. The way I do pictures is to upload them to an online photo album (I use photobucket) and then it will give you a link to post on forums. No biggie about the picture....was just curious. Love old bikes.

Regarding the rotors and paint. I don't think they look bad at all painted as long as you are careful. If you want to replace them, you might look on Amazon. I recently got some AC Delco brand rotors from Amazon for the front (haven't put them on yet) and they were under $30 a piece....black coated hats and vent edges and looked to be good quality. Not sure if there would be a JCW size. Napa may have another "premium" option rotor that is coated for just a bit more $$ as well.

Update: We did get our WMW high carbon coated JCW Brembo rotors today. They are available for $199 for a pair, not on the website yet but can be ordered over the phone.

I wouldn't say I "cheaped out" if I would have paid the local service guy these would be the rotors I ended up with. My warranty is up and after taking it to a BMW/MINI specific mechanic who quoted me $680.00 for brakes I figured I would do it myself. Being the first time I've ever done brakes I guess I was just too ignorant to know that the bright shiny Napa Rotor that was handed to me would rust. Lesson learned, that's why I'm going to spend the cash on something decent and ditch the rotors that have been on the car for only two months.

All that said, did you have a decent rotor to recommend?
