OS Giken clutch vs stock JCW clutch

Does anyone have any experience with the OS Giken STR or GT clutch? I want to know how the pedal pressure is compared to a stock JCW clutch.

Thanks

The OS GIKEN clutch is a little bit firmer but not stiff if that makes sense. The stock JCW clutch is smoother during take-offs, that’s for sure.

Unless you plan on tracking the car, I’d stick with the stock clutch assy.

OS Giken makes a GT version for people that are doing more street driving than track driving.

I am thinking about doing the OS GT clutch and diff again in the spring.

Hopefully some others will chime in as I know there are 3 or 4 people here on NAM with OS clutches and or diffs.

If you’re going to buy a “street” version, then I’d stick with the factory clutch... I guess it depends how much track time your doing.

Same with the LSD, if I wasn’t going to the track, I wouldn’t install it. Though I have both, neither is worth the money spent if your car is a 99% street car IMO.

I'm afraid my HP will overtake the factory clutch. Engine project is coming together.

That makes sense... definitely will help.

The STR and GT clutch disc are the same. The pressure plates are different in the two. The GT is softer for easier daily driver use. I like the GT clutch.

Didn’t the GT come out pretty recently? I think mine is an STR. If I remember correctly, they were suppose to come out with a more streetable version of what I bought.

Yes you have the STR, the GT wasn't avail at that time.

I bought the OS locking diff. What is the reason you do not recommend it? As in what issues are there in normal street driving? I probably won't track the car but I'm looking for traction on both wheels. They spin easily because of the torque. Especially around turns.

Ray,

Perhaps I should have clarified a bit. If you’re an aggressive driver (on the street or track) and want the extra performance, then by all means, go for it.

The point that I was trying to make is it is more of a “track/severe performance” item than in comparison than someone throwing a wing on their car... at least it looks cool....lol.

If you have a use for it, you’ll love it but for the people that are installing it just for the heck of it, I’d say save your money.

Hope that helps...

Mark

For those who have the OS Giken LSD, how often do you guys change the tranny fluid anyways?

I had the ATS Carbon LSD on my RSX Type S before and I was told by my mechanic that I have to change tranny fluid every 3 months or 2000 miles, so I am wondering if they same maintenance schedule should be applied to the OS Giken LSD as well! Please advise!

On a side note, I drove a 2012 R58 to do some paint work and I guess I’m so use to my clutch, I almost stalled the R58. Pushing the clutch in on the R58 was like stepping in water... there was no resistance at all.

Guess I’ve gotten use to my clutch assy...lol.

Orange, hey its not you man. MINI is having a real problem with the clutch assemblies on our cars. so in response they switched to a self adjusting clutch and changed the fulcrum point. engagement is much quicker but it should prolong the life..... hopefully, the real problem tends to be the loose nut behind the wheel :-)

BTW have you ever had a problem with the install of your osgiken? after install the engine will not rotate by hand. I blame my self for not checking the second the flywheel was installed, but ive put so many clutches in these cars I just assumed that everything would be ok. any info would be great

Yup, click on my link in my signature. When we installed the clutch, I installed everything back together (completely reinstalled the engine) only to pull it back out because it turns out the flywheel is a few mm’s thinner and the stock bolts bottom out thus locking up the engine.

Read the link, you’ll see what I mean.

HTH’s,

Hi Mark-I'm hoping to get my OS clutch is next few days. I'm still confused. What exactly is binding? Is it that the bolts are sticking out and making contact with the clutch disc? What did you do to fix it? Grind the bolts down.

Thanks

No, I used a washer to pull the bolt back in.

Supposedly they fixed the problem but I would doublecheck before I buttoned everything up.

Check with Way at Way Motor Works. If he doesn’t have one, he can at least tell you how fast he can get one.

He could be confusing clutch slipage with the tires breaking loose!! The factory clutch holds at 270 wtq.
