I thought it was variable electric assist. Not sure if that changes the ratio or not, but that was what my salesman indicated. I don't have my Mini yet, so I can't verify this.

This is my suspicion as well, hence my original question of the actual ratio. My last car was 16:1...it was like steering a ship. I think the WRX STI is 13.5:1 for comparison. Rally cars are in the neighborhood of 11:1.
Looks like the steering is electronic power assist. Meaning the stiffness of the steering wheel adjusts to the speed of the car. Easier at low speeds, harder at high speeds. Not sure of the ratio, but it is 2.4 turns lock to lock. This is from the Mini literature.
