2023 Cooper S problems

I have a 2023 Cooper S with 3k miles on. The first problem was the clutch pedal assembly needed to be replaced, took almost 2 weeks for that repair. Now it has a check engine light. I also noticed after the last service the brakes don’t work like they used to. The dealer is an hour away and it with traffic takes longer. It’s going in next week and with the holidays here I don’t have time to do this. I want to trade it in and be done with, but the check engine light on is a problem. My last Mini a 2007 didn’t give me any problems while I had it. I’m so disappointed with this car. Anyone else having these issues?

1. You have an F56 LCI2, not an R56. But you posted in the right place so maybe a typo?

2. Why did the "clutch pedal assembly" need to be replaced?

3. I can almost promise you, on a car with 3,000mi, the CEL is on because your gas cap isn't tightened all the way and it's triggering an EVAP code, but unless you scan the code nobody really knows.

I checked the gas cap and it’s on tight. The clutch was squeaking and it didn’t engage properly, they replaced the whole assembly and that fixed that. It’s going in Monday for the repair.

The clutch thing is definitely a bummer, hopefully the CEL is something simple. The powertrains in these are faaaaar more reliable than older Minis, so that's some bad luck to be honest. I wouldn't be surprised if it is related to the previous work too.

After the repair I noticed the brakes don’t stop like they used too and they also had to bleed the system. My 2007 didn’t have any problems in the first couple of years.

My car has been at the dealer now for over 2 weeks. They can’t get the check engine light to stay off, they have replaced some parts and after the test drive it returns. I checked my phone app and they put over a 100 miles on it and today I noticed they disabled my gps. Something is going on.

Have they told you what the fault codes are? Do they do any dealer-installed crap like a Lojack or other "security" system? What have they replaced?

The car drives fine, but I’m not sure about what codes. They are sending all the info to the engineering department and then they tell them what to replace. This car only has 3,200 miles on it. I think they replaced the valve cover because the pvc is built into it and that didn’t work. I’m about an hour away from the dealer, so they know that the light will probably come back on. They gave me a loaner, but I just want it back so I can get rid of it. I just don’t trust this car.

The car is still at the dealer, 30 days today. They have replaced a lot of parts and they can’t get the check engine light off.

As a former (non-dealer) tech that's pretty inexcusable even with the time it takes to get parts etc. Might wanna read up on lemon laws etc. Sorry you're dealing with all that.

I had a call from BMW it looks like they are doing a buy back. They have put 300 miles on it. They said they have to drive it over 20 miles and then the light comes on.

Sorry that is happening to you. My 2023 has been fine so far (knock wood). So strange that they can't get a back CEL to turn off. The point of CELs that is that they throw codes then you fix the issue. I wonder if it was crashed for flooded before you bought it and they never disclosed, or didn't know about it either.

Good luck!

It’s really sad this was the first car that I ordered. The car is now at there BMW dealer and I’m not sure how many different techs are driving it. It had 3200 miles on it when brought it in, now it’s over 3500. I’m very meticulous with my cars, had the first oil done at 6 months. It was garaged and never been in snow or rain. At this point I don’t want it back. The whole experience has just upset me so much and even if they find the problem I don’t want the car back. I’m pushing for a buy back.

Not good... I don't blame you I would push for a buy back myself. Hope it all works out in the end for you.

Hi,
They just approved the buy back, so know I’m waiting to see what they offer me. It only had 3200 miles on it when I brought it in. They told me the service order is the size of encyclopedia. They have replaced a lot of parts and they reset it and after 20 miles the light comes back on. They had a team from Mini engineering look it over and they fixed what they told them to do and still not right. BMW was pushing for me to wait a little longer and they would compensate me I guess with a big warranty. The dealer is like an hour away and I feel this car is just going to be a headache. Over the summer they had to replace the whole clutch pedal assembly.

like I said I really love this car. I had a 2007 that was problem free, but I don’t think I want another.

I hear you. Big Warranty or not it sounds like a problem waiting to stay forever. Banish that gomobile stat.

They haven’t sent me the offer yet. If it’s not good and I don’t except it, then they would continue working on the car. I gave it 5 weeks and I’m starting to feel like maybe I should wait a little longer. I just spoke with the dealer the other day and they still have no clue what the problem is. I guess that’s my emotions getting the better of me.

Have you spoken to Mini USA yet? That's a damn long time. They need to tell you what codes they're getting, everything they've tried so far, etc. There is no issue that should take that long, I've swapped entire engines in a few days.

It shouldn’t cost you anything minus the miles you put on the car it’s not like you’re trading the vehicle in. If they consider this a lemon they need to replace the vehicle on their dime not yours or return your money you paid for it.

I’m starting to get mad now. I haven’t heard from Mini regarding the buy back. I was tracking my car and they have put 400 miles on it and now I see some Bozo from there BMW dealer is driving this car around all night. He lives like 30 miles away from the dealer. This car is still registered and insured in my name and this guy is driving it all over the state. I had enough.

That sucks... Sounds like they are trying not to do the buy back and trying everything to fix it. I guess they have someone driving it around to see if the light will stay off. I know if it was my car I would call the GM of the store and find out why they turned your GPS off. They have no right in doing that. I hope it all works out for you.

They didn’t turn the gps off. This employee drove the car home about 25 miles away, then drove it to grocery store and somewhere else. They never told me and the car shouldn’t be used after hours.

I think when that happened they must have disconnected the battery or was changing out parts, it was reconnected the next day. Sorry about that.

Driving the car around with a weirdo problem that doesn't want to cooperate by making itself known, in order to catch the car in the act/under normal use conditions, is not unheard of. HOWEVER, the one time it was done to my car (not my Mini - this was long ago), they asked me for permission to do this first. They absolutely should have done the same -- sought permission -- with you.
