F55/F56 2016 F55. Id4 to id6
2016 F55. Id4 to id6
Hey everyone,
I have a 2016 Mini Cooper S 4 door with id4 and was looking to upgrade the system to id6. The screen I currently have is the 8.8” with navigation but it is not touchscreen. I read a lot of things around but I haven’t found an answer for this yet, I’m aware it’s probably a stupid question: would the upgrade enable the touchscreen or that only works if I install the newer round dashboard thingy? Also what’s the difference between id5 and id6? Thank you.

Hi - I may be parsing language, but until very recently, you could only update a Mini that came with an ID4 NBT Evo (an ID4 NBT Evo is shorthand for an NBT Evo that has 2gb of ram) to a version of ID5. This made adding CarPlay possible, but you were limited to split screen CarPlay and a user interface predating the current (LCI2/ID6 light) interface.
It is now possible to update ID4 to ID6 light (the latest Mini interface) and to fullscreen CarPlay.
Updating the firmware on the headunit, unfortunately, won’t enable use of a touchscreen - you’d need a new headunit for that.
Finally, whether you upgrade an ID4 headunit to ID5 or ID6 light, you likely will have occasional reboots when using factory navigation. This is a function of the ID4 headunits having 2gb of ram, and ID5/ID6 is intended to run on NBT Evos with 4GB of ram.
I have experience with this upgrade and have tested it on my own car.
Please feel free to ask me any questions.
