ISTA, INPA, Tool32, yadda yadda - how to get started with Ethernet-OBDII cable?

Long story but I need to use Tool32 for a particular task on my F56 -- reset of a short circuit counter. That in turn led me down a rabbit hole of figuring out how to lay hands on Tool32 and an Ethernet to OBDII cable. I've done both, only to find that serial to OBDII is what most of the chatter is about, and Ethernet to OBDII for Tool32 is an elusive discussion.

Is anyone using Tool32 with their 3rd Gen MINI? ISTA? INPA? Can someone provide a quick lay of the land in terms of which tools are current, which are "past tense" (if any), where to get them, and how to get them working with this Ethernet to OBDII cable?

Any slivers or bits of firsthand information would be helpful. I'm already scouring BMW forums and trying to make sense of it all, but I would rather hear something from someone who has actually lit up this software business with their 3rd gen MINI.

Also on the hunt for info here. A lot of spammy/dodgy looking websites trying to make me download 7z files and run exe. I think I'll put the proverbial "condom" (on my computer (tor and a burner VM?) before I go too much further.

On a similar note, I'm trying "deep obd" as well. What I really want is more temperature gauges (transmission fluid, etc) for some experiments in towing a small trailer.

Hey @robotarmy , I finally found my way into some of these tools, including with a working Ethernet cable. Whole other world and definitely being careful not to set my car afire by hitting the wrong key while plugged in, lol.

I have not leveraged this new knowledge in a way that tells me how to get you temperature info in a way you couldn't with, say, a Foxwell scanner. But feel free to ping me if you have Qs. I'm still figuring out the "right" way to lay all this stuff down on a laptop, just once, so that bits from all over the universe aren't flying everywhere
