Dope! I'm currently stockpiling parts to install in one go and these are one of them. Definitely will have to get mine powdercoated too.

What's the benefit of these? I would think that replacing plastic parts with metal would just turn into heat sinks...

Better air flow. If you look at my writeup, I put a few more pictures. On one side, instead of making the stock pipes smaller, Mini just designed 3 dents in the pipes to fit around stuff. Those little things are small but restrictive.

These pipes done have them.

One thing I would like to add to this post as Mini_Vinnie and I both experienced this issue is on the old pipes you have to grab the four o-rings from inside the connectors and put them onto the new pipes. If you do not do this you are going to have air leaks which will cause the car to throw codes for too much airflow on the MAF sensor. I spoke with Forge and going forward they are going to include this information with the pipes now.

I haven't looked, but are those o-rings available as a separate part or do you just need to repurpose them from the stock tubes? I would like to just order new o-rings when I do this job if possible. Do you know off hand? Great write-up by the way.

I am sure you can get them from a BMW/Mini dealership but I repurposed them from the stock pipes. They are a special kind of o-ring sadly not one you can get off the shelf.

Guys, for the life of me, I just couldn't get the pipe off any of those connections; especially in trying to get them off the intercooler joints (both hot side and cold). I understand the unspring the clip into release location, but even then, I couldn't get them to separate. Is there a trick or some sort of secret know-how on this?

Are you pulling the spring enough? That was my problem I had to lower the intercooler down a little bit to get the spring to fully release to get the clip off.

I used two separate screw drivers to unseat both arms of the spring. I assume that's enough to clear the joint mechanism for me to pull, but still couldn't pull them separate at all. Pain in the butt, it's been 2 weeks since I'm at it, car still sits in the garage with bumper off, waiting on this pipe to separate from intercooler. If I can't get this done, I'll throw down the towels and not do another lick of upgrading to this S I got. It's really irritating working with this car so far. Gen 2 didn't give me this much grief.

That is really interesting I never had that much trouble trying to get them to unseat and I have done them on both S models and JCW. Have you tried to spray them with a PB buster or something to see if they are corroded on at all?

I'll keep at it in the oncoming days. It's so weird. Maybe I'm not doing something right with the spring clips. Are those clips completely removable? If so, it's probably best that I completely take them off before I go and try to separate the joints. Thanks a lot for the input. Will update once I reach the next milestone.

Off of the stock pipes they are not removable because they have a plastic ring that they are connected too. Unless you are comfortable breaking that piece of plastic it is not reused on the new pipes.

Then how are the new ones held on? Mine came with no hardware to secure them. I was able to get the clips out without breaking the plastic. It was a PITA to do but it's possible.

I know it's hard to see but the clip slots right in to the hard pipe and holds it in place. I reused the clips and the seals inside the pipes.

I believe the plastic piece was just to hold the clip in place at the factory when they are all lined up on the assembly line. It does not serve any real purpose that I can see since the clip springs shut.

Okay, that sounds more reassuring. I think my demise also stems from that clip and I'm wanting to remove that clip completely off the stock pipe and try to pry off the joint. Will be re-using the clip on the new pipe. Thanks guys.

Don’t lose the o-rings!
I helped a friend do these on his car and he had an issue and the large one was lost somewhere on the road. Apparently you can source the 3 smaller ones from the dealer, but to replace the larger one, he actually had to purchase a whole new factory replacement charge pipe just for the o-ring..... and irrc it was over $300.
it would be nice if someone started producing replacements or if Forge had a source for them.

Yeah, it was just about $300 after tax and shipping. Everyone but FTP reuses the OEM seals. And even with FTP they only make their own for the v2 iteration. Their v1 reuses the OEM seals too.

Good to see you're also lurking in the 3rd gen forum, too, Grumps! Thanks for the great advice. BTW, my 2nd gen with the JCW turbo and RPM stage 2 tune runs great! but I'm trying to phase out and sell my 2nd gens and currently am working on the 3rd gen build. These cars are fun and addicting for tinkering with.
