New Rear Brake Pads at 19k Miles

Hey guys, I have a 2017 Mini Cooper with 19k miles and the rear brake pad warning came on last week. Took it to the dealer and they said my rear pads are at 3 mm and needs replacing. Is this normal for a Mini? I have had several BMWs and they've never needed brake pads for at least 50k miles. I got them replaced by the dealer for $320 but I feel it shouldn't have needed it so early.

I'm afraid that the F56 is eating rear pads for breakfast, lunch and dinner. My car has only 15K and last time I was in for service they were pushing me to get new pads. I haven't got the warning yet, but by 19K I'm pretty sure I will.

From what I recall, the rear brakes are applied for traction control even if you aren't using the brakes. I take that to mean the more aggressively you drive the faster the rears go. In my Countryman, the fronts went first and that was 30,000+ miles.

My R56 did front brakes at 55k. I traded it in at 70k and the rears still had about 5-10k left to go. Current R58 at 40k brakes are fine. 15k for breaks can only mean you got bad parts when you bought it. Now my TIRES did only last 15k lol.

I feel you. Check post #22 for the best explanation I've heard so far. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...rake-pads.html

Maybe the rear brake pads are sticking, it happens on the gen 1 and gen 2 MINIs. But if you ebrake a lot or use the ebrake and park on a hill all the time I see this happening.

I guess it's possible? I have a stick and always use the ebrake when I park. However, this phenomenon never occurred on my R52, E46 m3, cayman, STI, or my S4. All of them were manuals. And I've always lived here/driven the same roads/driven the same way. (Yes, I am that old)

My R52 and R58 JCW burned through the rear brake pad sensors first, both sticks and I track them. I think its just a MINI thing that is much worse if you have the rear dragging brake problem, aka rusty rear ebrake cables that like to stick.

good find! 26k on my 2015 F55 and still on original brake pads (front and rear both). Rear sway bar installed at 10k. Presumably that’s the reason for not having exceptional wear.

(And could all those premature brake jobs have been part of why MINI USA decided to stop including brakes in the “free maintenance” program?)
