F56 Auto Start / Stop Not Working

I happened to notice the other day that my auto start / stop no longer was working while I was at a stoplight and accidentally toggled the switch that turns the feature on (I normally turn this feature off since I don't like the car turning off at stop lights, etc.).

Since I don't normally use this feature it isn't a big deal to me, but was wondering what could cause this feature to no longer work? I tried unplugging my radar detector and Scan gauge from the car to see if it was an electrical draw issue with external devices being plugged in, but that didn't seem to make any difference. Even when I put the car in Green mode, it no longer shuts off at a stoplight. Weird eh?

I am going to be asking my dealer about it next time I go in for service, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Is the outside temperature low? Is your battery drained?

Look at your Owners Manual. There is a long list of conditions when the auto start/stop system will activate and deactivate.

If you are in auto-manual, it does not work for me. You have to go back to auto when you are at a stop and the engine stops. Putting it back on auto-manual restarts the engine.

If you're already stopped and toggle it on, it won't have any immediate effect. At the next stop it should, or it'll show you an icon that means it won't/can't. And if it won't, it's due to one of several reasons, such as it being too cold out. Also if you have your steering wheel turned beyond a certain point - like you're positioning to make a turn into traffic - it won't come on. And like mentioned, if you've got an automatic in manual shift mode, it won't activate.

I had an X1 prior to the F56 and got to learn all of the start/stop idiosyncrasies at that time

Did it work properly after you did the remap on the JCW tuner Kit? and then again after the NM tuner was installed? Could having something to do with either of those. If picking one of the two, likely is the NM since the remap would not take the green mode into consideration nor the on/off feature.

As you said probably isn't a big deal (I do not nor will I ever use it in the future), I'd remove the NM and see if the feature returns before hitting the dealership. If after you remove it and still a no-go, I'd have the dealer look at it and get it fixed. If not for you, then for the resale or trade in value.

Voltage shows 14.4

Pretty warm here in Florida . Understood about toggling when already at a light - left it enabled for a few entire drives with no change in behavior and tried with steering wheel dead center.

Yes - worked fine after both. The only thing I can think of is I have installed a bluetooth OBDII reader and radar detector in the car. However, I would have thought unplugging those items and leaving them disconnected for a while would have solved any voltage drain issue - I mean 14.4 volts is plenty right?

Agreed regarding getting to the bottom of it for resale value down the line. While I may not use that feature, I intend to get it working again just because

In addition to the reasons listed in the Owner's Manual, I've found that the Auto Start/Stop might not work for the following reasons:
  • It's Wednesday
  • Partly cloudy skies with a 40% chance of showers
  • An African government has been overthrown in a violent military coup
  • The earth is making its journey around the sun
  • Someone voted for Kodos

^^LOL to Nuke-em's post.

I've noticed a few circumstances the Stop/Start doesn't activate:

*engine coolant and/or oil temp still cold
*steering wheel turned more than a few degrees
*outside temp below about 15°F
*the coolant temp is on the high-end of normal
*too many stop/starts in a short period of time or distance

Just to give you guys an update on this.... My dealer has really gone above and beyond in trying to solve this mystery of the MSA not working (the technical term for the auto stop/start function). They have checked all connections and switches that could be causing the feature not to function and even tried replacing the BDC to see if that may have been the culprit with no luck.

After all that, it turns out that it may be a JCW-related software issue. Either the JCW Tuning Kit software or the JCW Big Brake Kit software. Now since the MSA functioned after the JCW Tuning Kit software update but stopped working after my JCW BBK software update, logic would tell me the issue lies with the JCW BBK software.

Do any of you guys have the JCW BBK for the F56 with the updated software installed that can check to see if your MSA is no longer working?

I wasn't aware the brake kit required a software change. Learn something new every day.

Some further information... Appears to be JCW brake kit software on manual transmission F56s.... Hopefully someone else who reads this and has this setup can test theirs out too.

In my F56 cooper S, if it's very hot out (usually is here in Texas), and you are running the AC "hard" the auto start/start won't function. I believe the AC is battery powered so running the AC is drawing from the battery. If you don't run AC, my engine will remain "off" at lights for a lot longer than if I'm running AC. I had a BMW up until now, and the screen would tell me the status of auto stop/start. I believe it would not work due to "comfort override".

I find that having the air on low. 1 or 2 bars will be enough to activate the engine shut off function. I normally turn off air or lower it if I know I'm about to hit a stop light.

My "Auto Start" doesn't work neither, according to the info i got it is not working until i have fixed & erased some lambda fault datas -, this happened after install of 100-Cell downpipe.

On the other hand i don't care. as the car runs great.
