Start Stop Switch doesn't turn off

My 2015 4dr HT Cooper takes 3 or 4 attempts to shut off the radio, etc. Engine shuts off OK with 1 press. Common problem or visit to dlr needed?

Are you opening your door after pressing the button?

I press mine twice, then open the door. I'm pretty sure that after that second press, the radio and window up/down functionality stays on for a short time, unless/until you open a door.

Check your manual, somewhere around page 60 it describes the state of the radio and other accessories when the engine is off.

The car acts differently depending on if your foot is on the brake, also if your foot is on the clutch.

Try taking your foot off the brake. It should be once to turn the engine off, twice to turn the radio off.

When your foot is on the brake, it sometimes thinks about starting the car, or cycles between modes.

Another good point

Also, behavior depends on how quickly you make those two switch activations. If done in rather quick succession, the radio often times will not shut off (requires another click). This has happened to me a couple of times.

Now I put car in park, feet off the pedals, click once engine shuts off, pause, click again, radio stops, then open door. If yours doesn't do this, then a trip to the dealer would be in order IMO. Three or four attempts is not normal in any case.

I never do a second press, I shut off the engine and when you lock the car everything else will shut down. I always know if I forget to lock it because you can hear the radio.

Did not know this. I always thought you had to do the second press. I'll give it a try today

I believe all of the MCS does this. We have two of them and they also don't always turn off when the switch is pressed. I believe it is due to the ECM looking for the temperature (oil/water) and how long/hard the engine has been run. Input must be within certain parameters to turn off the engine....otherwise it keeps running to allow the turbo to cool.

I don't think this is true. The cars will shut off when you tell them to if the car is operating properly. There is no programming that I am aware of that will cause the car to continue running after you have activated the stop button. I have run my cars hard, very hard and especially my JCW Coup and it always shut off even right after a hard run. If this is true I have never ever heard of it from any of the forums that I have been around and none of the 5 cars that I have owned has ever exhibited this type of behavior.

I think it is true, I thought it was in the manual.

I assume Washington is the state. Back in '07 I was in Toronto in a 40’C/110'F scorcher, I was driving an R56 with the stupid sunroof, like a lizard in a terrarium, while my R50 was being prepared. Just driving from the dealer to my hotel got the car panting, very strange to get out and hear the engine going.

In the manual, let's see...Maybe it's just the fan...

I don't think so. But you are right about the fan. The fan keeps running under certain conditions in order to cool and also there is a small water pump that circulates the water through the turbo to cool it. Here is a link to the manual. Think of it, after a hard day of motoring you pull your mini into the garage and close the garage door. You mini keeps running even though you shut it off. You get to cleaning up your garage a bit and the next thing you know your dead because if asphyxiation.

If your car continues to run after you have switched it off it needs to go to the doctor.

A quick double click of the start/stop will shut off engine and ignition. Too much delay and you have to wait a second and one more click. I'm at about 50/50 success now.

Thanks all for your responses. I believe it's just about getting used to some unique behavior in the Mini which is one of the things we like about it.

I miss having a real key. Last week i found our mini with the engine running but the doors locked. My wife had driven it the day before and somehow forgot to turn it off after parking it. It was idling for 21 hours. I told her to look at the tach needle in the off position as an indicator of a stopped engine.

You couldn't hear the engine running? I know the car is quiet but its not that quiet.

I also saw that several large car companies, BMW and Mini included, are being sued in federal court because of push button starters. Apparently others have "forgot to turn the car off" and it has resulted in 13 deaths. At least that is what the suit claims. In my opinion it's another way to excuse people for personal responsibility. One thing is for sure it's another way for the Feds to intrude on our personal lives and it will certainly drive up the cost of cars and stifle further innovation in my opinion. We'll all eventually just be pods sitting in a bubble being moved along a predetermined path at a pre determined speed with no personal interaction in getting where we want to go. I dread the future as far as the automobile is concerned.

Maybe it's time for a JCW exhaust...a few days after getting my Infiniti Q50Hybrid S I went on a client visit and came back to the car to find it was still running. That thing is quiet, especially since it often rolls in e mode. After adding a Stillen exhaust that no longer happens 😉

Does Mini have a chime if you leave the car running with your key in pocket? I have CT200h and NX200t - both of them do that. CT200h is dead quiet on idle because its a hybrid. I have never forgotten to turn off either. Bigger possiblity is you leave the engine running to get some stuff and then forgot to turn off the car once you did.

It does, but it usually doesn't go off until you've already stepped out of the car, so you might not even hear it.

hmmmm ...my 2016 4 door hard top does not have any chime or alert to let you know the car is running and you've left the car .....OR WILL START UP BY ITSELF (my car has the auto start/stop feature).. ....the other day this happened : I pulled into my garage and put it into Park and the car shut off itself as the auto start/stop was on.... i was still in the car in my garage looking over the mail that i just retrieved and after 2 minutes the car started up by itself as i did forget to hit the stupid switch twice ( or even once) .....my wife's Honda Fit also has a keyless access system and will beep you loudly if you leave the car and the car is running

it does seem like a tragedy waiting to happen....

I wonder if there is a way to code the Mini so that the engine will shut off when the key fob is out of range.

I like being able to lock it with the motor running, especially in the hot summer months. If I need to run in the grocery store and grab something or stop at a restaurant and go in for take out I can leave the A/C on for my dog. You definitely know when you leave the car running and lock the doors because the horn beeps twice. On my manual transmission I always park it in gear so there's no way I'm gonna accidentally leave the car running when I walk away.

Vet ,....... i am thinking you have the factory alarm? if you do not have the alarm, there is no confirmatory beep when you lock the car ...but even if there was, there's no reason to lock the car when you pull into your garage for the night if your garage gets locked

No factory alarm. When you lock the car with the motor running it gives two beeps on the horn. Maybe this is a US spec thing. Try it yourself and see what happens. Scared the heck out of me the first time it happened at a rest stop. I always lock my car where ever I park it. I have never accidentally left it running.

I own a 2015 MCS without a factory alarm and I can confirm that the car does beep the horn twice without the alarm system. It happened to me one morning when I was late for work. I parked. Put on my lipstick, got out of the car, hit the lock button on my comfort access door and the horn beeped twice. The idle was so quiet that I didn't notice I had left the engine running. Maybe it's a comfort access thing?
