Automatic Climate Control

Hey guys - quick question just to make sure I'm understanding things correctly with the automatic climate control. In other cars I've owned (2 previous Honda Accords) you can set the system to 'Auto' and it automatically adjusts fan speed and AC to meet your pre-defined temperature for the driver and passenger side.

In the MINI, you still have this function but then you also have the fan speed control dial in the center which seems to be a bit strange to me. If the system is set to auto, shouldn't it decide how fast or slow the fans need to spin? I haven't found anything with my Google-fu to give me a satisfactory answer to this question; I'm hoping someone on the forums might know. Thanks!

I like the 'new' auto. Here in AZ it means that I can start up a hot car and a tornado of air won't blast me since I have determined the fan force, Very easy to adjust too.

I think I've noticed in the AUTO mode that the fan speed setting serves as an upper limit speed, regardless of where it's been set. And then the speed automatically goes down a notch or two once the interior is cool enough.

So if you set the fan speed somewhere in the middle for example, that's as fast as it's ever going to go. But it will go slower when the temperature you've set is finally reached.

Can anyone confirm that observation?

Yes, that is how it works. The manual says that too on page 130

BMW can never get climate control right. My E46's 'auto' was truly auto in terms of fan speed, but not auto at all when it came to temp/humidity control. My E24 didn't have anything actually resembling climate control at all.

E24 hvac's were silly, e28's were much better, the f56 really works well even with a pano roof and silly mesh shade.

I just laid down some left over gloss black vinyl I had left over, and covered the front half of the pano to block the sun 100%. It's shiny enough to mimic glass.

You must have a different manual than I do as my page 130 talks nothing about climate control. Pages 115 through 118, but nothing is stated about how the fan control works other than to say it's adjustable. So I am still at a loss as to the true method of operation.

Oh, I'm using the downloaded owner's manual:

"2014_MINI_Hardtop_With_Onboard_Monitor.PDF"

I just looked in the owners lounge and for the 2015 Cooper Hardtop the automatic climate control section begins on page 135 of the Climate Control writeup.
