Sunroof: why a diffuser. . .

. . . And not a popup deflector? It looks cool, and may allow a bit more air into the car? But mine collects bugs and is noisy as hell at speed. Seems if it ain't broke and all that.

Irritatingly noisy. I hardly ever open for that reason. Dumb design.

Next time you're driving at a reasonable speed, like 40mph, open the sunroof and hold down the defuser with your hand. It's just on a spring so that's no big deal. You'll feel like you're in a bottle with someone blowing on it. It causes a brutal low-frequency sound.

I agree with everyone that it's horribly noisy and catches bugs but the alternative is actually worse. I also agree that I generally keep mine closed because it's so loud.

Sunroof is one option that I had on my 2007 that I'm glad I don't have on my 2014 (not available on Coupe). Sound like they screwed it up on the F56. That's too bad.

I had Crystalline 40 put on it and like the light (with less glare and heat) even if I don't open it very often.

What other Tint did you get and what degree of Tint? Do like the Crystalline?

Hey wtwien! I got Crystalline 50 on sides and back. According to tint guys, combined with the factory tint it will meter at 37 on inspection and we have a 35 limit with leeway to 32. It is a subtle tint. Sometimes looks dark, sometimes not so dark depending on sun angle. I think it really compliments the car. It really does cut the heat and glare from sunroof. I often had the screen closed because of glare and but I don't need to do that anymore. I put my hand up with sun directly overhead and I could feel warmth but nowhere near hot. I told the tint guys about what I've heard about sunroof being difficult to tint. They did not think so. Said it was no different than any other window other than having to hold tint over their head to apply. I'm happy with the job they did. I don't have the receipt handy but I think it was about $648 total for all (not windshield).

Purple reflection: the tint thread had someone mention a slight purple look with Crystalline. In certain light (like dusk), I see that too. I don't know if it will go away when it cures or not. It usually is not noticeable.

The diffuser combined with the perforated sunroof screen made me order ours without a sunroof. It was just too bright inside with that screen. First car since my very first car which was not a convertible or had a sunroof.

I have found the sun blocking to be much better than the one in my previous R56.

Agreed.
If the diffuser wasn't there, your ears would pop because of the pressure. Usually cars with sunroofs are fairly loud when open.

I've always had to crack open a window or 2. In my last car, I opened the rear windows until the low freq thrumming stopped. It had a small metal diffuser and while loud, was more streamlined than F56 diffuser that just obviously is not meant to be streamlined in any way.

Did you do both the front and back sunroof panels?

Oh, do you mean the Clubbie? Oops, by "last car" I meant my Toyota. The Clubbie was loud but I figured it was because it had a roof rack. I did not open its back roof panel.

What's wrong with the traditional pop up deflector? Might do the same job and avoid some of the noise.

Don't look at me, I didn't design it. I write embedded software for production printers.
