Change center console - NAV

Hi,

I'm eagerly awaiting my new F56 MINI and already thinking about the mods that I'd like.

I opted not to get the inbuilt NAV, so my current center console is like in the attached picture (current.jpg). I'd like to add a display to the center console. Additionally, I'd like to connect my cell phone to this display, so that my cell phone can project it's screen on that display.

Has anyone done this?

thanks
D

i don't think you'll be able to get any aftermarket unit to fit in there since its not a standard DIN or double DIN mounting and shape.

Yea that seems tough. There's also a great deal of info that goes into the entertainment system, both the 'stock' unit you have and the bigger connected one. Stuff like the electronic dipstick (which is the only dipstick!) and other diagnostic info plugs into it, and the controls for the center ring and other car features. Aftermarket is unlikely to support those functions, while I'm not certain, I'd assume you risk losing the ability to control those things.

That's not gonna happen. If you wanted NAV and your phone on the screen why didn't you opt for the Nav and cellphone on the screen options? That's sorta why they offer them. Otherwise you can do what we all do: either get a Tom Tom/Garmin or use you cellphone's Maps.

Ok; no after market. So, is it possible now that I have my MINI to get an OEM MINI NAV console added? Has anyone done this? Do I just ask the dealer for it?

PS: the reason why I originally didn't want it was because those maps get out of date so quickly (and there isn't an easy way to update them).

They probably can, I haven't seen anyone on these forums have it done yet (though one other person asked about the same question you did, with the same answer, but I think ended up ordering with Nav in place).

I don't think you'll like the price for getting it added, just looking at the two pictures there is a difference in console dimensions and button placement, so its not just dropping the new screen in, its a replacement of the front pieces too. Also, not sure if the center console and arm rest are required with the Connected System or not (when you order the options, its included, not sure if a dealer could add it after without it). You'll probably end up paying more for the hardware itself, plus significant labor, and maybe activation codes for the Nav (not sure if those come with the hardware or not, they do when you get it as an option...). Rough estimate, I'd guess you're looking at several thousand dollars (2-3k?) to get it re-done.

The Nav in the F56 is not Disc based, btw, and the maps can be upgraded via USB from what I've read. I'll have to check the manual to confirm, it may even upgrade them automatically? It knows when there is road work near me!

How long ago did you order? Your best/cheapest/easiest bet here may be to modify your existing order if it hasn't gone into production yet, and if it has... canceling and re-ordering with the Connected and Nav options.

The maps have always been able to be updated as far back as I can remember. And once you've got the basic center unit you won't be able to upgrade it. You would have to sell the car and get another one with the NAV. (updating maps is overrated IMO, how may brand new important roads are built?).

This is also a question for those (like me) who bought off the lot...

they did it for the second generation MINI's, its just not available yet for the 3rd generation? It must be doable, just no one has done it yet?
