Given San Francisco's traffic congestion and tight parking, I am not surprised there are lots of MINIs there, as well as other smaller cars. I just returned from a month in Europe, mainly Italy, and small cars rule there (as we all know).
Ha yeah, I was at a dealer yesterday and they had the R56 and F56 parked next to each other. It was shocking how much different they are when side by side, and not just the tail lights!
Drivers in my city need big tail lights ahead of them to alert them to the fact that they should be prepared to stop at any moment (and this should take priority over their need to finish their text message!). One of my patients told me she had been rear ended THREE times! I can therefore decree that I'm ok with the light size

Agreed, can't see any problem with the larger taillights, and if it helps the following idiots see you, that is a good thing.
Personally, I'm not won over by the new looks either. That didn't stop me ordering one, though. This car is so much more than the body. Besides, I get to sit inside. It's everyone else who has to look at it while I cruise by.

Yeah, I get that too. I'm weirdly picky I guess and just prefer the way the R56 looks inside and out. There are a few things I do prefer on the F56, but not enough to order one. For me, the breaking point was the MY2015 changes that jacked the price up for an identical build 2015 vs. a 2014!
I hated the tail lights when I first saw the release pictures but fell in love with them immediately in person. They seem to just "fit" with the new design.

Same. I was apprehensive at first seeing the cars in pictures and originally had plans to wait for the JCW, but once I got to see and drive one in person it was love. I figured I would just get an S and mod the crap out of it instead of driving my high mile bog standard ford focus.
Also. I thought VO was a terrible color from pictures. Saw it at the DFW international auto show and fell in love so I ordered it.
After driving for 65 miles, in the pouring rain, on the interstate, I love the idea of the larger tail lights. I could not see the tail lights of some of the cars in front of me. The ones that had larger lights were great.
I don't. I only care that I find them ugly since it would be my car. And it's not just the taillights, it's a cumulative thing where I finally couldn't 'force' myself to ignore those things anymore :(
Anyway, to each his own. I honestly wish I was in the other camp!
Someone thinking your car is ugly isn't inherently something you should care about, but nobody likes seeing something they love continuously bashed. Disliking something is natural, but continuously expressing your opinion about how much you dislike something becomes something more.
I don't like Prius', but I don't go around on Prius forums saying how stupid I think they are and insulting those who do enjoy them. It's common courtesy, something sorely lacking from the internet these days.
