Driving light question

Has anyone gotten a car with driving lights from the factory or dealer installed? I see the button on the steering column that is supposed to turn them on, but when I push the button on (green pilot light lights up) the lights don't go on. Would anyone would be kind enough to give any insight on this?

Thanks

They typically wire these to only come on with high beams.

Thanks Dave. I should have known to try that.

Sorry for the unneeded post.

are we talking about the driving/fog lights mounted in the lower fascia or the aux lights that are an add-on? I guess I assume the latter, but...

The default wiring is that they will only come on with the brights if the switch is turned on. Hence the "Extra" driving light description.

well, that's pretty stupid... I think I'll have to find a way to defeat that when I get my Mini... I'd want to use them with the parking lights on... kinda silly, but then so is a Mini in some ways...

MINI doesn't want anyone to get blinded by them. They are pretty bright. One figures if you could normally run with bright lights on, you could add to the illumination and be safe without fear of blinding oncoming traffic. Most drivers tend to run with low beams and use high beams when there is no oncoming traffic. Unless one is hunting raccoons, it makes sense.

not saying it doesn't make sense... just that I'd like to run with parking likes and the driving light (think of the Mustang with the lights in the grill)... but I agree, it takes some responsibility...

Why do you think they call them parking lights?
They are to indicate you are parked!
In some states it is illegal to "run" with your parking lights on.
Hmmm, I wonder why?

Perhaps ships should run/sail with their at anchor shape flying.

I just love the idea of hunting Raccoons with my Mini, I don't know why but it makes for some humorous imagery in my twisted mind.

(Note, I have nothing against Raccoons, they are cool and the natural bandits of nature)

@Fourflys

Check your state regs.
Most don't allow them to be on without the high beams on, or is it with high beams, now I've confused myself........any way, if yo urges witch them, you might get huge tickets or worse.
And if I remember correctly, since both our MINI's have them, there is a module which the go thru in a harness and won't work without it!

None that I searched allow them to be on by themselves or as parking lights.
And a few states say that when NOT being used actively, they must have their covers on/in place.

interesting... I know I've had a few cars that had the driving lights in the lower fascia (I don't call them fog lights because they were white) and they would automatically turn off WITH the high beams... they would only work with the low beams... maybe I misunderstood something above about how the lights work... and I never got a clear picture of if all of this is talking about the integrated lights in the fascia or the added ones to the grill area (the ones that would have covers)...

Standing upright on the passenger seat.
Upper body protruding through the skylight.
Parker 12 gauge under arm.
Double Driving lights in full regalia.
A windstorm of dust in immediate pursuit.
A Thunderstorm Mini S on safari.
Those Raucous Raccoons will never rest.

True. And it is also not legal in some states to run with parking lights/driving lights with the headlights off.

Check your local laws.

Speaking of which two questions;

If you get the LED Headlights are the driving lights LED also?

If they are not LED driving lights are there Yellow bulbs that can be swapped into them. Fog is a major issue here in the Tennessee Valley and I have fogs (yellow) on both my vehicles.

The configurator lists LED fog lights as an additional $250 cost on top of the LED headlights.

I was at the launch event lady night and looked at these closely as they are what I am getting on my car.

LED headlights
LED fog lights (built in to bottom facia)
The extra accessory "driving lights" that mount on the top grill are regular (non-led). So switching these to yellow looks possible.

Yeah it looks that way for the Sports Package. Without it they're an additional cost on top of the LED headlights though.

Actually it seems this is only true for the Cooper. For the S it looks like they're standard items.
