Maybe a regret

When I ordered my MCS (arriving in about 10 days), I stayed with the 16" tires because I was concerned about a rougher ride w/ the 17s and possible rim damage from potholes. However, after driving an MCS w/ the 17s, I thought the ride was okay -- at least on the roads I test drove on. Also, those Cosmos look really cool.

Ever hear of anyone getting anything for their 16s when moved up to the next size?

I've known dealers to switch wheels/tires between cars to make a sale but it was on the used lot. Hard to say what your dealer is willing to do.

FWIW, I've had a couple of MINIs with both 16s and 17s. From my experience, handling is nearly identical between the two for regular driving and in some cases the 16s felt superior to me in regards to responsiveness. You are right about 16s being much less susceptible to pothole damage. On my 08 with 17s, I blew two tires and bent the rims slightly twice. After the second time, I found a set of used 16s stock wheels and then never had another issue. The ride improved and handling was not negatively impacted. Once the 17s were removed, I counted multiple rim bends on the back side of all the rims. If I were to order a new one today, I would probably get 16s. The 17 and 18 inchers do look nice, though....so I understand your dilemma.

I went with the black 17" Cosmos wheels. They look great in person. Talk to your dealer and see what kind of deal they can do as a "take off". You might be better off buying your own custom wheel/tire package (ie. Tire Rack) and sell your factory wheel/tire with pretty much zero miles. Just a thought.

too bad you're not in the northeast, I bet there'd be a lot of demand after all this winter if them fit the other minis

I've always preferred the ride of the 16s over the 17s in 1st and 2nd gen MINIs, especially once the tires start to wear some. With brand new tires, it's harder to notice a difference.

I did say "maybe," and I asked the dealer for an estimate to switch. I'll probably stay with my 16 Loops, but those Cosmos are really good looking.

I like the 17" Cosmos as well, after looking at many cars I think that 18" wheels on the Mini are to big.

IMO if you have to "settle" on the 16" Loop style, you're not really settling much. That is a really nice looking wheel. Unless you really want a 17", I think you'll be fine. Check Misterbl's new thread announcing his recent Saturday delivery. They look fine, size wise.

16's are actually sought after in the north...
strong OEM rims with good paint....we use them for snows...
and keep the light weight ones for summer....
Bet you can sell them!

Definitely look at the aftermarket to get some lighter than stock wheels. Save the 16's for a rainy day.
