Big Newt Says:
"Can't get locked out with the Mini even if the battery dies. The squared part of the fob that you attach the keyring to comes out and there a physical metal key that unlocks the door. Then you put the fob in the slot and the car starts even with no battery in the fob. All it needs is the chipset in the fob to start, it doesn't need a battery."

1) can use use the fob without a cop on? (Maybe it would be smaller)
2) does the lanyard just slide on or is it more secured?

1) Would look ugly
2) You pop up the little round Mini logo. It then goes and locks inside your actual key hole (half circle style). Pretty secure so far. You can't remove the key anymore without removing it.
3) My phone recognize the NFC chip but I am not sure what I can do with it?

As much as I want it, how many times can you change the settings, ya know?

I love just being able to keep my key fob in my pocket and starting the car with the switch:-) Keys always in my pocket means never locking my keys in my car again lol I locked the keys in my 07 MCSc, left the keys on the rear tailgate, closed it forgetting to grab my keys, and the car locked itself! Didn't have a second fob for it(bought car used) so my dealer let me come and borrow their 'entry tool' basically a plastic wedge and an inflatable bag that gently puts a gap between the window and the b pillar. Then there's a big rod with a hook on the end that you use to fish in the car to pull the door handle or trigger the lock switch...
Not a problem with the new fobs:-)

Just bought my first Mini, a 2014 Hardtop. My car came with two of these. It has an actual key inside that you can use to open the car just in case. The dealer told me that the batteries are replaced with every oil change. No, there is no key slot as the new cars are started with a toggle switch. The "key" has to be on your person or the car won't start. If you don't lock your car and leave the immediate vicinity the car will lock itself. The dealer programmed it this way at my request. Although I haven't tried, I believe that you can change this in the radio settings. It's an awesome little car. Sport mode is a beast !!!!

Yep, the key fob is huge. It's like practical joke huge. Wait until you carry that monster around in your slacks all day. It feels looks like you're carrying a walnut in your pocket. I take the fob out of my pocket when driving 1.) because it's uncomfortable in my pocket and 2.) because you have to fish it out of your jeans pocket when you get out to lock the car since you can't lock the car without it. I lay it in the rounded storage in front of the shifter when driving where it slides around making scraping noises. I may get a lanyard and just carry it around my neck like Flavor Flav.
In other words, why would BMW make such an impractical, non-ergonomic, goofy sized key fob for a MINI. MINI=small!!

I had a situation where I kept getting a "trunk open" warning on the dash. I'd get out, open the hatch, then close it again and check it was latched. I'd drive 50 feet and get the warning again. Thought for sure I had a problem with the latching mechanism until I realized the fob, which is attached to a clip on my belt, was between my leg and the seat side bolster. A bit of pressure on the fob would activate the button that opened the trunk! So now the fob stays in my shirt pocket while in the car and I sent a nastygram to Mini that the dash warning didn't say the "boot" was open!
