Steering Wheel replacement due to faulty horn?
Steering Wheel replacement due to faulty horn?
Anyone have a problem with a faulty horn due to worn contacts located within the steering wheel?
My '16 F55 is at the local Charlotte dealer for normal maintenance and they've determined the culprit are worn brass horn contacts located behind the airbag. Due to the complexity of the innards of the steering wheel, there are no parts replacement, no adequate cleaning, no sanding, no repair etc. The ONLY fix is a new $950 steering wheel! BMW assistance will cover $600 but still quite a shock for a horn fix. Dealer service has always been first rate so no problem with them; frustrated with the factory solution.
Apparently a fairly common BMW problem from what I've read in various blogs.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

My dealer replaced my wheel* under warranty for the faulty contacts/horn issue this autumn. Car was in for an oil change and they went thro all the service updates. Id not noticed Maybe worth mentioning to the service rep you are aware of a known issue - and appeal to their better nature on any out of pocket you are on the hook for.
Other way to address this would be: if you quite like the mini yours or JCW wheel - get them to replace your wheel with one of those - telling yourself a couple of hundred for an upgraded wheel isnt the worst thing to happen.
